Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Routes langs speciale tuinen
in oer-Veenkoloniaal landschap
ACHTERGROND
Tal van bijzondere tuinen in de Veenkoloniën doen mee aan de EigenWijze
Tuin Weken. Ze zijn te befietsen. Routes door uitgestrekte aardappelvelden
lopen naar heidevelden, boomgaarden en waddeneilandwaardige duinpannen.
PIETER BROESDER
VEENDAM ,,Het landschap van de
Veenkoloniën bestaat uit veel meer
dan alleen vlak landbouwgrond. Er is
hier van alles te doen en te beleven’’,
zegt Nathanja Mulder van de VVV in
Veendam. Met negen particulieren
en ondernemers ging ze rond de ta-
fel en kwam met de EigenWijze Tuin
Weken. ,,We tonen de schoonheid
van de natuur en laten mensen het
landschap beleven. Het gaat om spe-
ciaaltuinen van particulieren, orga-
nisaties of ondernemers die soms
een ware attractie hebben gemaakt
of juist een stilte- of bezinningsge-
bied.’’
Vorig jaar was er nog de Tuin &
Kunst Tiendaagse die door omstan-
digheden geen nieuwe kans kreeg.
Mulder: ,,We hebben zulke mooie
tuinen. Het is zonde daar niets mee
te doen. We zeiden dan ook: kunnen
we niet iets anders bedenken.’’ Zo
gezegd, zo gedaan. ,,Het is een proef.
Als de tuinweken aanslaan, komt er
vervolg.’’
Wie de route wil volgen (de tuinen
zijn ook apart te bezoeken), gaat
langs lavendel, een bomenpark, eco-
tuin, een kwekerij gespecialiseerd in
bijzondere planten, een bamboe-
kweker, beeldentuin, Heemtuin en
theeschenkerij met boomgaard.
Daar zwaaien Anda (68) en Gert
(65) Seldam de scepter over wat
Theetuin De Kainstobbe heet. Aan
de Wildervanksterdallen 10 zijn de
Veenkoloniën zeker te beleven. Het
weidse land is overal. Aardappelvel-
den liggen tot aan de einder. De
Kainstobbe wordt omarmd door de
openheid. De wind heeft er vrij spel.
Het waait. ,,Hier waait het eigenlijk
altijd’’, zegt Anda.
Rond hun boerderijtje (een rijks-
monument) creëerden ze in de 17
jaar dat ze er wonen hun paradijsje
met uitzicht op Wildervank, Stads-
kanaal en Boven Pekela. Zij komt uit
de stad, hij uit Rotterdam. De schuur
is nu ingericht als theehuis waar be-
zoekers kunnen kiezen uit zeker
honderd soorten thee uit Hamburg.
Voor wie iets anders wil staat er een
koffiebrander. Achter de hoeve ligt
een boomgaard met zestig hoog-
stamfruitbomen waar geen bestrij-
dingsmiddelen worden gebruikt.
,,Appels, peren, pruimen, kwetsen,
kersen. Het groeit goed, bloeit mooi
en staat leuk’’, zegt Gert. Jaren gele-
den lag er een groot, kaal veld. Anda:
,,Staatsbosbeheer wilde er een pro-
ductiebos. Dat konden we voorko-
men. Of wij het dan niet wilden ko-
pen. Dat wilden we wel.’’
Met de pomologische vereniging
gingen ze aan de slag. Anda: ,,Daar
weten ze alles over oude fruitrassen.
Groninger kroon, zoete appel, tam-
me kastanje, Westerleese kers, alle-
maal soorten die hier vroeger veel
voorkwamen.’’ Dan valt er zeker veel
te plukken en te oogsten. Gert: ,,We
zijngeenfruitkwekers.’’Anda:,,En er
waait ook heel wat fruit van de bo-
men. Gelukkig blijft er genoeg over
voor onze high tea en lunch.’’
Zwaluwen zitten op takken en sto-
ren zich niet aan bezoekers. In de
verte laat een koekoek van zich ho-
ren. Vogels zijn er ook te kust en te
keur in De Heemtuin Muntendam
(55 hectare) en aanpalend natuurge-
bied Tussen de Venen (ruim 40 hec-
tare). Atypisch Veenkoloniaal is het
park dat doorloopt tot de golfbaan in
Veendam. De Heemtuin herbergt
een schat aan landschappen. Wie
wegloopt van het paviljoen komt in
een paar stappen uit op een Drents
heideveld. Schapen begrazen de
vlakte. Nog weer verder waan je je in
de duinpannen van een Waddenei-
land. Pontjes en vijvers barsten van
het leven. Her en der zijn bijzondere
bomen geplant. Bloeiende orchidee-
en steken de kop op. ,,Kijk een kale
plek. Daar slapen reeën’’, zegt voor-
man Harrie Rath.
Tientallen mensen zijn bezig met
het onderhoud. Re-integranten,
mensen met een verstandelijke be-
perking (via een samenwerking met
zorginstelling De Zijlen), vrijwilli-
gers al dan niet via Vrienden van De
Heemtuin. De NME (Natuur- en Mi-
’Kennis, kunde
en liefde voor
het groen staan
hier voorop’
lieueducatie) is bij steeds meer pro-
jecten betrokken. Wietske Trausel is
sinds anderhalf jaar als begeleider
en coördinator bij De Heemtuin be-
trokken. ,,Kennis, kunde en liefde
voor het groen staan hier voorop.’’
Door allerlei strubbelingen liep
De Heemtuin geruime tijd niet. Er
waait een nieuwe wind, zegt Trausel,
die volgend jaar meer evenementen
wil houden zonder dat De Heemtuin
verwordt tot attractiepark. ,,Na de
zomervakantie gaat de schop de
grond in. Er komt onder meer een
oerpad, zoiets als het Blote Voeten-
pad in Opende. Het pad wordt om-
ringd met hutten zoals die er in de
vroege Germaanse tijd moeten heb-
ben gestaan. Daar kunnen we arche-
ologische vondsten of nagemaakte
objecten over die tijd tentoonstel-
len.’’
Er lopen gesprekken met zorgin-
stellingen. ,,We willen ouderen naar
hier halen. Juist de mensen die zelf
niet over eigen vervoer beschikken,
dreigen te vereenzamen. Vaak heb-
ben ze zelf nog op het land gewerkt
en kunnen ze hun kennis overdra-
gen en heel boeiend vertellen. Hun
verhalen horen we graag.’’
Harrie Rath wijst op een stuk land
waar een appelhof met bessentuin
en pluktuinen moeten komen, waar
mensen zelf hun fruit, bloemen of
groentes kunnen halen. Meer pu-
bliek moet de tuinen in om te genie-
ten van wat er groeit en bloeit. Kin-
deren willen ze er hebben die losge-
maakt van hun smartphone buiten
gaan ravotten of meehelpen.
Waar kan, worden maaisel en
snoeihout hergebruikt. Rath: ,,En
anders gaat het in de verkoop.’’ Zoals
de honig uit de eigen bijenkorven.
,,O, ja. Het maaisel, het hooi gaat
naar een buurman. Die heeft een be-
drijf in Winschoten waar er meubels
van worden gemaakt.’’
