The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) established a Legacy Program to address the loss of knowledge as experienced employees retire. The program conducted interviews and benchmarking to develop a roadmap with three focus areas: individual knowledge capture, group knowledge capture, and individual/group knowledge transfer. Two case studies showed how the program successfully captured critical knowledge from departing executives and subject matter experts to ensure a smooth transition. Lessons learned emphasized top management support, using knowledge management models and methodology, meeting customer expectations, and continuous improvement. The next steps invite interested parties to contact the program consultant for more information.
