Professor Igor Efimov was installed as the inaugural Lucy and Stanley Lopata Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University. Longtime supporters Lucy and Stanley Lopata established this professorship in 1996. Professor Efimov's research focuses on the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and conduction with the goal of improving therapies. He uses various techniques like electrical stimulation and molecular biology. Lucy Lopata continues her philanthropic work in the St. Louis community after her husband Stanley's passing in 2000. They have generously supported Washington University through numerous scholarships, buildings, and this distinguished professorship.
