certain syllables in a word, or to certain words in a
phrase or sentence. In English, stressed syllables are
louder than non-stressed syllables. Also, they are longer

language: is a language where the stresses syllables are
said at approximately regular intervals, and unstressed
syllables shorten to fit the rhythm.
Cont.
• Word stress is the emphasis we place in a specific
syllable of a word when pronouncing it. Word stress
is accent on one syllable within a word.
In English words that have more than one syllable.
• Sentence stress is what gives English its rhythm or
"beat". Sentence stress is accent on certain words
within a sentence. Most sentences have two basic
types of word: content words and grammar word.
