Edward Brooke was the first African American elected to the Senate by popular vote. He graduated from Howard University and Boston University Law School before serving in the Army. As a Senator, he wrote a book called "The Challenge of Change" discussing his political principles and beliefs in civil rights. Brooke received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for being the first African American politician to serve in Congress.
