Edward Brooke was the first African American elected to the U.S. Senate by popular vote. He graduated from Howard University and Boston University Law School, then served in the Army before being elected to the Senate in 1966. As a Senator, he wrote a book called "The Challenge of Change" discussing his political principles and beliefs in civil rights. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his accomplishments as the first African American politician in Congress.
