Jeannette Wing, head of the Computer & Information Science and Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation, argues that computational thinking should be added to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic that every child learns. Computational thinking involves problem-solving methods borrowed from computer science and is an important skill for everyone, not just computer scientists. It is intrinsic to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines as well as other fields.
