10. Baiet el suhaymi
Early Cairenne architecture is a distinguished mark of architectural
achievement. Walking into Baiet el Suhaymi was like a walk
back in history where practical living took a completely different
meaning from today’s.
There are many interesting elements that distinguish Baiet el
Suhaymi. Originally built in 1648 AD, then extended by Sheikh
Ahmed as-Suhaymi, this house gives a glimpse of how a wealthy
merchant lived.
The first distinguishing element is that of total privacy. The concept
of ‘sakan’ and ‘haram el baiet’ or the peace and privacy of a home
was a concept strictly adhered to at the time and architectural
design served that purpose.
Although located in what would’ve been the heart of Egypt’s
capital and on the corner of what would’ve been a very busy
street, the bent entrance that takes one into the open court of
the house and the thick stone walls completely isolate the world
outside. Even once passed this bent entrance, the inhabitants of
the house, especially the women, retain their privacy as guests
walk into an open court surrounded by mashrabiya windows.
Another distinguishing element, which is not only present in
domestic but also in religious architecture, is climatic consideration.
Air conditioning was not a needed invention as thick walls cooled
the house and deliberate high ceilings and domes allowed the
warmer air to rise and for the cooler air to descend.
There’s more to be said about Baiet el Suhaymi and how basic
concepts in its architecture compare and contrast with today’s
architecture, which is based on space more than function. As
there is also much to be said about how Egypt’s early domestic
architecture reflects not only tradition and culture, but also
practical living mixed with aesthetic elements.
