Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Teh Hong Piow is one of the richest man in Malaysia. He is the founder
and chairman of Public Bank Berhad, he is known as one of the most successful banks in
Malaysia with exist in other foreign countries.
Tan Sri Dato’Seri Dr.Teh Hong Piow was born in Singapore in 1930. The was starting his study
life at Singapore Anglo Chinese School together with his wife, Puan Sri Tay Sock Noy. He was
finish his Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Malaya in 1989 . Tan Sri Dato’Seri
Teh have 3 daughters and a son. Teh’s success today is because of his hard work and insistence
where he worked persist to believe he can become successful in this banking industries.
Teh believe that not every one born to be poor, so he started his first work at started Overseas-
Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) after he graduate as just a small bank clerk. By using his
hardworking and talent he get promoted by only 5 year time to became the officer of the bank.
After his promotion he get attention of the banking industries and having opportunity offer by
Malayan Banking Berhad as a branch manager .
When Teh was 34 years old, he was promoted to become the General Manager of Malayan
Baking berhad and he was the youngest manager at the time. When Teh was 35 year old, by
using his experience and knowledge he founded his own bank Public Bank Berhad in year 1965.
He was appointed as a Director of Public Bank on 30 December 1965 and has been a chief
executive officer since he founded Public Bank and operating the business in August 1966.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr.Teh now was aged 84, he have over 64 year of experience in banking and finance
industry. Effect from 1 July 2002, he was re-designated as Chairman of Public Bank and
Chairman of Public Bank Group. He serves as Chairman of the Board Executive Committee and
the Group Human Resource Committee.

Public Bank Berhad was first establish by the chairman and founder Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr.Teh
Hong Piow on 6 August 1966, the concept of Teh establish this bank as “a bank for the public”.
The first branches of Public Bank operating their business at Kuala Lumpur with only 32
staff.Public Bank Berhad growth with a rapid speed, after five week of operation Teh opened
second branch in Melaka, followed by another branch in Ipoh the following year. Public Bank
