6. HARVEST
STEPS OF PLAY
‱ Select the number of fish you wish to harvest this year.
‱ Record the number on a slip of paper, insert the paper in your ship
and take the ship to the operator to fill in your order.
‱ Harvest requests will be filled in random order.
‱ Receive your ship, remove the fish and start again with Step 1.
Things to consider –
‱ You’ll want to maximize your harvest.
‱ The ocean can hold up to 50 fish.
‱ If your order exceeds the number of fish in the ocean you get no fish
that year.
‱ We will run the game for 6 – 8 years (rounds).
REALITY
DISCUSSION
‱ What happened in the game?
‱ Who was responsible for this result.
‱ What would have been the max possible wealth available to all teams?
(e.g. 10 years x 25 fish = 250 fish divided by number of teams).
‱ What wealth did the teams actually achieve?
‱ Was there a winner?
‱ What policies would you have to follow to achieve max harvest for all?
‱ Where do you see examples of this in real life?

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Why use games? They are fun (with a purpose), give feedback to the players throughout the game and at the end, passive student – active student (experience their own ideas), motivate students to interact with the topic, improve teamwork, less threatening environment (format is playful), real life relevance and information, accelerate learning, flexibility (go with the flow) and variety into your classroom.
  • #3 Materials – 200 tokens, 8 ships (noodle boxes), labels (to name ships) and pieces of paper to put in order of fish.
  • #4 This video sets the scene. From World’s Deadliest Catch. Gung-ho, tough, out there in all conditions.
  • #5 To replenish the ocean, if more than 25 fish remain, only replenish up to 50. If less than 25 fish remind only add the number of fish remaining (eg if 7 fish left, add 7 fish to the ocean).
  • #6 How can the game run so that you don’t deplete the very resource you are dependent upon? You may have to restart if you get down to zero fish early.
  • #8 Discussion could involve the super trawler that has been kicked out of countries around the world (including Australia).
