Tony Gatlif is a French film director who is half Algerian and half Romani (Gypsy). For 35 years, he has produced and directed films about the Roma people in Europe in order to raise awareness about their culture and the discrimination they often face. His latest film "Liberté" focuses on the 30,000 French Roma who were detained and deported during World War II. While critical of France's recent expulsion of Romas from illegal camps, Gatlif argues the current situation cannot be compared to the deportations of the past. He believes Europeans now want Romas to become invisible and advocates for recognition of their long history and contributions to European culture.
