Dynamic League Point System

INTRODUCTION
During a discussion on creating a new professional sports league in India, we analysed the
strength and weaknesses of present 3 point system. We realised that the present 3 point system
is not considering the significance of away match win over home match win. By
considering the limitations of 3 point system in professional league setup, Sports Management
students of Sports & Management Research Institute (SMRI) developed a new point
system called Dynamic League Point System (DLP). We present this system in order to
increase the excitement of each and every league match. This report describes the advantages of
DLP over the existing 3 point system.

HISTORY OF POINT SYSTEM
1. Point system is used to determine the winners
of the league or tournament.
2. In early days of the competition the simple
money-prize-pot system was used.
3. TheTwo Point System was evolved from the
above mentioned system.This system was used
until 1980’s
(i)For a win 2 points
(ii)For a draw 1 point
4. In order to promote more attacking style of
Football the Three Point System was
introduced by Jimmy Hill in 1981
James William Thomas Hill, OBE was an English football professional and
personality. His career included almost every role in the sport, including
player, trade union leader, coach, manager, director, chairman, television
executive, presenter, analyst and assistant referee.

THREE POINT SYSTEM
The Three point system was introduced by James Hill in 1981. In this system the Team who won the match
will get Three points and losing side will get zero point. If the match is drawn, both the teams will share 1
point each. The Three Point system was first introduced in 1981/82 season of English Football league. In 1995
FIFA formally adopted the system and it subsequently became standard in International tournaments. The
world’s top division Football leagues like EPL, La Liga,…. follows this system.
Limitations:
1. Difficulty to find the most consistent team.
2. The significance of away match win/draw over home match win/draw is not considered.
3. Chance of getting equal points for different teams is high.

DYNAMIC LEAGUE POINT SYSTEM (DLP)
This is a new method of deciding winners in
professional league formats. Dynamic League Point
system (DLP) honours the away match performance
by giving it more significance than home matches. The
DLP overcomes the limitations of Three point
system and enhances the competitiveness and
excitement of every match.
As per DLP, an away win is significant than home win
and away draw is significant than home draw.
Moreover, it punishes the home team, which loss
their home match by giving negative point.
Equal points for draw normally tempts teams to play
for draw during certain circumstances. DLP will
decrease that tendency.

ADVANTAGES OF DLP
1. DLP is easy to understand and simple to implement.
2. DLP give more accurate results based on the consistent performance.
3. It enhances the excitement level of every match in the league and ensures optimum attendance and
attention in every match by decreasing the impact of predictability.
4. In three point system the sum total of points has a range. E.g.:A League Containing 20 teams with home
and away matches it ranges between 760-1140. If all the matches are draw total points will be = 760
(380*2). If all the matches have a winner points will be = 1140 (380*3)
5. But, in DLP it has a constant value. ie.1140 due to the below mentioned point distribution method.
6. DLP will decrease the tendency of playing for draw.

INFERENCE
1.The result of the comparison of Three point system and DLP is shocking!
2.According to the DLP, the performance of Liverpool is more consistent than Manchester city. Liverpool
just lost one match in the whole season, while Manchester city lost 4 matches. Here, the most important
point is Manchester City have one Home defeat while Liverpool is unbeaten in their Home ground.
3.So, after applying DLP in the EPL standings of 2018-19, we can find that Liverpool was more deserved to
be the Champions.
4.Manchester city won the title by 1 point difference in Three point system but in DLP there is a 2 point
difference between Liverpool (115) and Manchester City (113).
5.We can also see that Arsenal improved their position from 5th to 4th.

There is a dramatic change in the top 3 and 4. If the ISL used the DLPS instead of the 3 Point system
Mumbai City would not get a chance to be in the Play Offs. Jamshedpur FC would have been there in
the playoffs instead of Mumbai City FC

CONCLUSION
From the above report we can conclude that DLP is more suitable than the presentThree point
system. DLP will increase the excitement level of every game because of the decreasing tendency
to play for a draw and decreasing predictability levels in the league standings.

We saw many teams lost their opportunity for getting a title because of the pointing system
rather than their on field performance.Thus we can say that DLP is far better thanThree point
system.
DLP is only applicable for Leagues.
