The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is a leading
advocate for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender (LGBT) individuals. Today, the HRC
focuses on a number of critical issues, such as legal
equality, fairness, and respect for LGBT couples and
their children, and works to secure their rights as
parents.

3. LGBT couples can become parents through
coparenting, adoption, foster care, donor
insemination, and surrogacy. Although, as of
2007, approximately 65,000 adopted children
lived with same-sex couples in the U.S., some
states restrict adoption based on sexual
orientation or marital status. In places that allow
LGBT couples to adopt children, potential
parents can pursue adoption through a state or
public adoption agency, agency open adoption,
open independent adoption, or international
adoption.

4. Although potential LGBT parents often face
family-building challenges no matter what path
they pursue, scientific studies show that
children of gay and lesbian parents are as
healthy and well adjusted as those raised by
