• American, 1932 - present
• Noted for sequential images

• Took classes at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh
• Attended University of Denver
• 1956 Parsons School of Design after military service, trained
as Graphic Designer
• 1958 Went to Soviet Union and made portraits of people on
streets
• Worked as freelance photographer for Vogue, Esquire,
Mademoiselle and LIfe Magazines doing fashion
photography and portraits
3. Work
• Interest in street happenings led him to make single
documentary images of the “social landscape.”
• Later began to address literary and philosophical
ideas about death, gender, and sexuality.
• Staged scenes to be photographed and worked with
multiple exposures, sequences, and series.
• Combined text and drawings with his images.
