COLLABORATION

There
are
ancient
truths
to
be
learned

from
drumming.
Intui6vely,
we
know

when
the
beat
is
on
or
off.
But
prac6cally,

do
we
really
understand
the
source
of

each
beat
and
why
they
fit
so
well

together?

Big
hint:
They
play
nicely
with
others...

It’s
2010,
and
posi@vity
is
driving
us
into
this
new
decade.
As
individuals,

     we’ve
all
laid
out
personal
goals
that
hopefully
compliment
the
goals
of

     our
organiza@ons.
But
as
leaders,
we
can’t
assume
that
good
inten@ons

     will
yield
good
business
results.
That’s
why
we
create
structures
and
eco‐
     systems
that
help
success
along.

Some
say
a
liKle
compe@@on
is
always
good.

We’re
not
here
to
debate
that.

  But
life
is
filled
with
choices.
At
Drum
Café,
we
choose
to
espouse
the

  over‐arching
ethic
of
collabora@on
as
opposed
to
compe@@on.
When
it

  comes
to
crea@ng
a
healthy,
produc@ve
business,
we
have
no
ques@on

  about
which
has
more
efficacy.

Collabora@on
speaks
to
a
deeper
quest

  many
of
us
have
for
a
more
meaningful,
connected
professional
life.

In
tradi@onal
tribal
culture,
when
an
important
decision
was
imminent,
all

    members
were
summoned
together
to
join
a
drumming
circle.
Different

    than
convening
in
a
boardroom,
these
circles
created
a
profound

    synchronicity
between
everyone.
How?
By
tapping
into
the
pulse
of
their

    community,
establishing
the
core
connec@on,
and
using
that
powerful

    base
as
the
star@ng
point
for
clear
communica@on.

Drum
Café
has
witnessed
@me
aVer
@me
the
emergence
of
this
unity

   between
thousands
of
employees
sharing
a
single
beat.
More
importantly,

   we’ve
created
complicated
rhythms
through
the
sheer
will
and
focus
of

   minds
and
bodies
united
in
the
spirit
of
collabora@on.

We
understand
the
ins@nct
to
energize
people
through
some
kind
of

  mechanism
that
will
mo6vate
them.
Fear
and
compe@@on
are
@red

  constructs
that
we
haven’t
seen
work
in
the
long‐term.

They
create
silos

  where
individuals
follow
dimly
lit
paths
guided
by
their
own
agendas.
They

  don’t
feel
the
pulse
of
the
organiza@on
because
they’ve
disconnected

  from
it
in
order
to
survive.

The
rhythm
behind
smart
business
starts
by
tapping
the
poten@al
of
each

   person.

At
Drum
Café,
we
do
this
by
recognizing
the
unique
tone
of
the

   individual,
and
then
introducing
that
tone
into
the
collec@ve
beat.

Experience
is
worth
a
thousand

                   Power
Point
presenta@ons.

                   Transla6on:
If
you
are

                   transi@oning
from
a
compe@@ve

                   environment
into
a
more

                   collabora@ve
one,
no
amount
of

                   language
can
replace
the
real

                   proof
that
life
and
business
will

                   be
beKer
as
a
result
of
this

                   change.

So
short
of
jumping

                   through
a
@me
machine,
how

                   can
you
manifest
the
power
of

                   collabora@on
over
compe@@on?

We
are
each
a
resource
for
each
other’s
learning.
The
purest
spirit
of

  collabora@on
comes
from
the
simplest
source
–
our
human
ins@nct.
6

  inches
from
our
mother’s
heartbeat
taught
us
so
much
during
our
earliest

  days
of
life.

We
don’t
have
to
live
as
far
from
that
rhythm
as
we
some6mes
do.

Drum
Café
has
created
a
forum
in
which
we
tangibly
experience
the

   inextricable
link
between
collabora@on
and
the
collec@ve
power
and

   wisdom
of
organiza@ons.
Our
methodologies
transcend
language,
culture,

   gender.
They
awaken
the
core
strengths
that
grow
strong
communi@es
and

   successful
businesses.
They
have
been
with
us
all
along,
and
it
only
takes
a

   village
–
or
a
smart
business
‐

to
reveal
their
power.
