DRILL AND BLAST 2016
WILL DELIVERHello and welcome to the 11th Annual Drill and Blast
conference,
With the downturn on commodity prices,
companies need to strategically cut costs and
implement ways of increasing productivity and
efficiency for less. Staff turnover is high, and
employees are expected to work longer hours with
less compensation, imposing threats to health and
safety, and productivity outcomes.
Increasing productivity, boosting efficiency and
reducing costs while working with environmental
restrictions, are key challenges within today’s
mining industry.
Mining IQ is proud to host the 11th Annual Drill and
Blast Summit 2016, which will include case studies
and strategy examples for these key challenges,
while highlighting new products that organisations
are utilising to improve their drill and blast
performance.
What will you take out of this event?
	Develop strategies to reduce cost, improve
performance and maximise productivity
	Understand changes in environmental restrictions
and safety requirements to ensure responsible
drill and blast practices
	Identify innovative technology and product
solutions to maximise efficiency and reduce costs
	Review changes in commodity prices to forecast
where the industry is heading
Proven and practical experience is guaranteed at
the 11th Annual Drill and Blast Summit for 2016.

09:10 Opening Keynote Address: Forecasting Changes
In Commodity Prices and How It Will Impact
The Drill and Blast Industry
In 2014 - 15 export earnings from resource and
energy commodities are estimated to have
declined by 11 per cent to $174 billion. This is
partly due to a 27 per cent decline in export
earnings from iron ore, and a 7 per cent decline
in coal export values. Export earnings are
forecast to increase to around $178 billion in
2015-16, and higher energy export earnings will
be underpinned by the start of LNG production
in Queensland (Resources and Energy Quarterly,
June 2015). Attend this interesting presentation
by the department of Industry, Innovation and
Science to gain a better understanding of why
the mining industry is where it stands and where
it is heading.
	Providing an outlook for Australian key export
commodities
	Exploring the commodity prices for Coal, Iron
Ore, and Gold to understand where the price
changes are heading for the future

14:20 Implementing Staff Training Systems to
Maximise Staff Performance and Minimise
Safety Hazards
Training staff is crucial to both production
efficiency and cost minimisation. Un-trained
staff can create challenges around technology
and product breakages, mistakes in blasting,
and impose significant health and safety threats.
With tighter safety legislations and limited
resources in today’s mining industry, this session
will underline how important it is to have trained
staff within the field to enhance blasting success.
	Improving productivity within the field by
implementing training techniques
	Developing strategies to teach inexperienced

Whitehaven Coal. This co-presentation with their
newest Graduate Engineer, will underline the day
to day operations in a successful coal mine with
a getting back to basics approach in which the
shot firers are responsible for organising on the
bench and timing of explosive firers.

	Graduate Drill Blast Engineer,
	 Maules Creek Coal Limited
16:10 Addressing a “Getting Back to Basics” Approach
to Improve Productivity and Profitability
As the industry emerges out of a productivity
down-turn, mining companies are strengthening
their cost reduction and efficiency programs
to regain momentum. As a result, business
improvement through drill and blast activities
has become a major focus area for companies
looking to drive down costs, boost productivity
and meet operational demands.
	Discussing how taking a back to basics
approach can strip away complexities in data
management
