The federal government will soon undertake what the General Services Administration, the landlord for all federal buildings, calls the largest public building project since construction of the Pentagon during World War II: consolidating the Department of Homeland Security on the campus of the former St. Elizabeth’s Psychiatric Hospital, a National Historic Landmark in Washington, DC.
Planning is also in the works for renovations to the 43-year-old Robert C. Weaver Building, the home of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
In 2010, the GSA commissioned a feasibility study of the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building, the 1.2 million-square-foot home of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The HUD Building currently is home to 3,000 HUD employees with 700 more scattered through the federal district. Using Macro BIM to perform detailed analysis of occupancy and existing space, the project team created a new maximized space plan to accommodate all 3,700 staffers. Several major modernization plans were also studied.

• Gathering and verifying data
• Analyzing multiple alternatives
• Developing cost estimates
Examples from the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building Feasibility Study and Program of Requirements project will be used to demonstrate these concepts. Additionally, lessons learned, other potential uses for the BIM, and a BIM roadmap for the project will be presented.

This was my second Graded unit Project, it involved construction of Steel framed Office building, based on HND modules we were advised to devise solution of Steel building which two areas of specialisation in which I chose Sustainability and Frame Structure. This assignment does not have drawings and calculations unfortunately i have lost them, however their is a copy at Former Stow College now Glasgow Kelvin college so students can access from there. For any structural help, I would strongly advise to meet Mr Murdo a very competent lecturer in Kelvin college.
Although its rough guide, we were not heavily using journals at that stage, as we relied mostly on our course material. However some of the Green material which i used was taken from companies publications.

Many in our industry look at technology as the silver bullet. The solution to all our problems. I for one don’t believe this. Technology though is a tool that when used in the right way and at the right time can enable us to change our delivery models and potentially solve some of our issues. BIM is not a new technology however its impact on our industry is only now becoming mainstream. Simply put BIM enables us to design and build a virtual model of the building . It enables us to simulate different scenarios, it also enables us to make mistakes on the computer rather than in the field. Micro BIM – Is being heavily used by the design and construction communities to design, fabrictate and construct the built environment. In enables our practitioners to answer the question of How do we build the building Macro BIM – On the other hand is aimed at the front end of the project, to enable owners to answer a fundamentally different question, namely IF the concept meets all the owners needs. Think of Macro as a very quick model used to simulate the high level factors associated with a go no go decision
Our software solution, DProfiler, is aimed at fostering communication at the beginning of the process. It is an integrated tool meaning that in a single application we can study the impact of change on cost, energy, the site, the schedule, the program, etc. Our intent is to enable value engineering at the front of the process. Value engineering is typically not done until after the Architect has provided a concept. By providing an integrated solution value engineering is integrated into the development of the concept. Since the technology is integrated it also enables multiple stakeholders from different departments to collaborate. Organizations like OBO(Overseas Bldg Operations, Dept of State) have great people, who provide lots of experience and knowledge, but often this is not used because they are not at the table when decisions are being made. The tool is based on establishing assumptions for elements in the graphical model. Costs are a by-product of these assumptions; modifying the assumption will impact the cost. The tool makes the assumptions visible to all stakeholders.
