In the business world, time is money. Being late for
an interview makes employers think you don’t care
about their time. Give yourself extra time to get to
your destination.
3. Don’t
Be unprepared.
Be sure to look on websites like Glassdoor to get a
feel of what the interview process is like and what
you should expect. You don’t always have to go in
blind.
4. DO
Bring a Copy of Your Resume.
Always make sure to have an updated version of your resume and reference list with
you. Also bring your portfolio, no matter how complete it is. Let your prospective
employers know what you’re capable of.
5. Don’t
Dress Inappropriately.
First impressions are very important. At a job interview, it’s
important to look presentable. We recommend a nice shirt
accompanied with a blazer and a knee length skirt or trousers for
women. Slacks and a button up shirt with a tie is always a good
look for men.
6. DO
Your Research
You don’t want to be one of those people who is
uneducated about the place you are working for.
Research the company. Find their mission statement
and goals.
7. Don’t
Be Dishonest.
Authenticity and truthfulness are the keys to a successful
interview. When talking to a potential employer about your skills
and experiences, honesty is the best policy. Let them know what
you are truly capable of.
8. DO
Ask Questions
Show interest in the company and position that you
are applying for. By asking insightful questions,
future employers can tell that you have done your
research and this may set you apart from other
applicants.
9. Don’t
Forget to Thank Your Interviewer.
Be sure to thank your interviewer for their time. Showing your
appreciation for opportunity is such a crucial rule of etiquette in
an interview.
10. DO
Follow Up.
It is more than appropriate to send your potential employer a
follow up email or phone call. This should typically be done a
week or two after your interview.
11. Don’t
Forget Appropriate Body Language
Your body language says a lot about your demeanor and how you
carry yourself professionally. Always remember to have good
posture and hold yourself to a higher standard.
