Don Pelayo was the first king of Asturias who led the region's independence from Islamic rule. He was born in Asturias to Duke Favila and an unknown mother. In 722 CE, he led an army victory over Islamic forces at the Battle of Covadonga, which secured Asturian independence. This established the Kingdom of Asturias and ensured the survival of Christianity in Iberia. Don Pelayo ruled from 722 until his death in 737 CE, during which time he continued defending and expanding the kingdom. His victory at Covadonga is considered formative for Asturias and Spain.
