Dog Training part IV - Reward
and punishment
Mosttrainingrevolvesaroundgivingthedogconsequencesforhisbehaviour,
inthehope of influencing the behaviour the dog will exhibit in the future.
Operantconditioningdefinesfourtypesofconsequences:
Positivereinforcementaddssomethingtothesituationtoincreasethechance
ofthebehaviourbeingexhibitedagain(forexample,givingadogatreatwhen
hesits.)
Negativereinforcementremovessomethingfromthesituationtoincreasethe
chanceof the behaviour being exhibited again (for example, releasing the
tension on anuncomfortabletrainingcollarwhenthedogstopspullingonthe
leash).
Positive punishment adds something to the situation to decrease the
chance of thebehaviourbeingexhibitedagain(forexample,growlingata
misbehavingdog).
Negativepunishmentremovessomethingfromthesituationtodecreasethe
chanceofthebehaviourbeingexhibitedagain(forexample,walkingawayfrom
adogwhojumpsup).
Mostmoderntrainerssaythattheyuse"positivetrainingmethods",whichisa
differentmeaningoftheword"positive"fromthatinoperantconditioning.
"Positivetrainingmethods"generallymeanspreferringtheuseofreward-
basedtrainingtoincreasegoodbehavioroverthatofphysicalpunishmentto
decreasebadbehavior.However,agoodtrainerunderstandsallfourmethods,

Sometrainersbelievethatthetoyactsasapositivereinforcerforthedesired

levelfromstandardtraining and conditioning techniques. This is seen most
clearly in the fact that, according to the laws of operant conditioning,
