Irishman savaged while alone in flat after row
CUP CURPHEW
By PHIL HARRISON
AN Irishman was killed
by his girlfriend’s out-of-
control bull terrier, an
inquest has heard.
Barry Walsh, 43, suf-
fered a number of bites
after being left to look
after the Staffordshire
dog in Essex, England.
He was found lying dead on
a mattress with a number of
puncture wounds to his legs
when partner Purdy Clarke
returned to the home two
days later.
Yesterday coroner Caroline
Beasley-Murray recorded an
open verdict at Chelmsford
Coroners’ Court. She said:
“This was a sudden unex-
pected death and raised all
sorts of questions. We will
never, ever be entirely clear
what happened.”
Det Supt Lucy Morris con-
firmed the dog, called Gypsy,
had previously been the sub-
ject of a court order for
being dangerously out of con-
trol in a public place.
Officers described the dog
as “running riot in the
premises” when they attended
following a 999 call in Janu-
ary this year.
Det Morris continued: “The
injuries were very severe.
Dog owner Ms Clarke told
the court how she discovered
the body of her boyfriend
after returning to the flat
following an argument two
days earlier.
She said: “We’d had a row
and I f***ed off. When I went
back he was dead.”
