TRAVELING EXHIBIT
COMING SUMMER 2016
Experience Tokyo’s vibrant culture in a
new interactive traveling exhibit at the
Children’s Discovery Museum!
In Hello from Japan families are
transported to two distinct areas of Tokyo
that exist side by side: one serene and
exquisite, the other too cute for words.
The beautiful, natural Shinto Shrine Park invites children to build a bridge,
crawl through a forest, encounter kami spirit, and make a wish at a
wishing tree.
Together, the exhibit highlights how old and new traditions coexist in
Japan, giving visitors a family-friendly window into Japanese culture.
Kawaii Central is a street scape inspired by Tokyo’s bustling Harajuku
district, bursting with color, trendy shops and cuter than cute kawaii styles.
(pronounced like Hawai’i). Kids sing karaoke, smile for the photo booth
camera, serve up a seasonal Japanese meal, and design adorable
mascots for their families.
This exhibit was created by CMOM and is part of the

Dr. Susan Sheppard (Piano) is a family
practice physician at OSF Fort Jesse Road.
She trained in Canada and moved to
the United States 18 years ago with her
son who is now 32. Dr. Sheppard resides
in Bloomington with her dogs. She comes
from a very musical family including
two sisters, many nieces and nephews.
Her son, Matthew, is an actor and a
drummer in Montreal and her 13-year-old
granddaughter, Amara, is in her tenth year
of piano and fourth year of cello at school.
Dr. Sheppard still remembers her first piano
teacher; she was only four at the time. Dr. Sheppard has stated
that, despite her traditional teaching and repertoire, she also
enjoys playing Latin, Jazz, and New Wave genres.
Dr. Darrell Looney (Jazz Violin) is an
emergency physician at OSF-St. Joseph’s
Hospital with Heartland Emergency
Specialists. He grew up in Detroit and has

his focus to Jazz, and returned to his “first
love” (playing the violin) upon completion
of his training and moving to New York. Dr.
Looney moved to Bloomington in August of
2010 with his wife, Dr. Woodhouse (Medical
Director of the Community Cancer Center),
and his then five-year-old son, Darrian. Dr. Looney continues to
write and perform his own music and collaborate with others
over the internet. Darraian Looney is 10 years old in 5th grade at
Northpointe Elementary. He enjoys Angry Birds, studies violin and

Dr. Dan Brownstone (Piano) started playing
the piano when he was seven years old.

Bloomington in 1995 that he once again
took up the piano. Dr. Brownstone is an

Dr. Meng Horng (Guitar and Harmonica)

graduated from Medical School of
Kaohsiung Medical College, Taiwan in

children and grandchildren. He has always enjoyed playing in the
concert events and thinks this is a good cause for the fundraising
event.
