LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING RULES:
NOW, LET’S PRACTICE:
I. Write questions with DO…? And DOES…? Take a look at the example:
1. I like chocolate. How about you? Do you like chocolate?
2. You work hard. How about Anna? Do you work hard ?
3. Lisa plays tennis. How about his friends? Does she play tennis?
4. Tom speaks French. How about his brother? _Does he speak French ?
5. Charles plays soccer. How about Richard? Does he play soccer?
6. Tina wants to be famous. How about you? Does she want to be famous?
7. I do yoga every morning. How about you? Do you yoga every morning?
8. John lives near here. How about his sister? Does he live near here?
9. Susan often goes to the beach. How about Lucy? Does she often go to the beach?
10. I love chemistry. How about you? Do you love chemistry?
II. Write the negative form for the following statements. Look at the example:
1. Lucy plays the piano very well. Lucy doesn’t play the piano very well
2. They know my telephone number. They don´t know my telephone number
3. He has a bath everyday. He doesn’t has a bath everyday
4. You have lunch at the same hour every day. ____ you don’t have lunch at the same hour every day
5. We sing very well. _we don’t sing very well
DON’T use DO or DOES with the
verb TO BE. WRONG: Douglas
DOES NOT IS a doctor. CORRECT:
Douglas IS NOT a doctor.
DON’T use DO or DOES with the
verb CAN. WRONG: They DON’T
CAN speak French. CORRECT:
They CAN’T speak French.
DON’T add –S to a verb in a
question or negation with the
third person if you are using
DOES. WRONG: Lynette DOESN’T
LIKES strawberries. CORRECT:
Lynette DOESN’T LIKE
strawberries.
DON’T ask a question without
using DO or DOES. James plays
soccer? DOES James play soccer?
DON’T say NO with verbs
different from CAN or TO BE
without using DO or DOES.
WRONG: They not write letters.
CORRECT: They DON’T write
letters.
Use DO with the pronouns I, YOU,
WE, and THEY or with nouns that
can be replaced by those
pronouns.
Use DOES with the pronouns SHE,
HE, and IT or with nouns that can
be replaced by those pronouns.
Use DO and DOES to ask
questions in the simple present.
Example: DO you like pizza? DOES
she like hamburger?
Use DO and DOES to say NO.
Example: I DO NOT study Math.
She DOES NOT work.
Use DO and DOES to say NO in an
abbreviated form. Example: We
DON’T play baseball. He DOESN’T
go to the gym.
Use DO and DOES to give short
answers. Example: Do you drink
wine? Yes, I DO - No, I DON’T.
