If you have not heard about the Detroit Lions’ heartbreaker in Dallas last Sunday, you probably
do not own a television or radio. Undoubtedly, this game will go down as one of the most
controversial games in the history of the NFL thanks to head referee Pete Morelli, and the rest of
his crew. It seems like the unlucky Lions of Detroit are always included in these types of games,
and some fans are convinced that this is no coincidence.
As soon as the pigskin left Lions’ punter Sam Martin’s foot during the opening kickoff, Detroit
started playing perhaps the best they have all season, and were off to a tremendous start. The
Lions’ defense caused the Cowboys to punt on their first two drives, including a 3 and out on
their first drive. The offense capitalized on their first two drives with a 52 yard catch and run for
a touchdown by Golden Tate, and an 18 yard touchdown run by Reggie Bush after a juke move
left Cowboys defenders in the dust. At the end of the first quarter, the Lions were on top 14-0,
and the hopes of them winning their first playoff game since 1991 were higher than ever.
Unfortunately for Detroit, the Cowboys’ coaching staff were able to make some successful

adjustments, and by the 4 quarter, the score was 20-17 Lions in a thriller.
Enter Controversy
After a Dan Bailey field goal cut Detroit’s lead down to 3 in the fourth quarter, the Lions found
themselves at 3 and 1 on the Dallas Cowboys’ 46 yard line. Stafford snapped the ball and
under-threw his tight end Brandon Pettigrew which resulted in an incomplete pass. The Lions
were not worried though, a flag was thrown on an obvious defensive pass interference call on
Cowboys linebacker Anthony Hitchens. Not to mention, Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant rushed
onto the field to scold the referee about the flag he had thrown, which could have easily been an
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty added to the pass interference call. What happened after all
of the ruckus cleared left everybody in disbelief, and Lions fans furious. Head referee Pete
Morelli made the decision to pick up the thrown flag. No penalties were called and the Lions
were left with a tough 4 and 1 after no explanation was given for the picked up flag. Coach
Caldwell’s decision was to punt, but he might have changed his mind if he knew that Sam Martin
would end up shanking the punt for a total distance of only 10 yards. Quarterback Tony Romo
took advantage of his teams good field position, and threw what ended up being the game
winning touchdown pass to Terrance Williams. The Cowboys come up with the win over the
Lions 24-20.
The NFL later admitted to several missed calls against the Lions, including the controversial
decision to pick up the already thrown flag, and issued an apology to the Detroit Lions. One can
only imagine how the game would have played out if the defensive pass interference flag was
not revoked. In no way was this the only reason Detroit ended up losing the game, but it was a
huge mistake that fans have the right to be angry about.
A similar situation happened to the Lions when they played the Bears in 2010. After Calvin
Johnson came down with what everybody thought was the go-ahead touchdown reception, it
was quickly taken away. Johnson’s score was taking away due to him not completing the
process of the catch. This was seemingly the firs
t time this rule ever came into play, and the rule was coined the name, “The Calvin Johnson

now. It is highly unlikely that the NFL will be issuing any game replays to make up for the
wronged Detroit Lions. The only logical thing for Detroit fans to do is to keep cheering on the
boys in Honolulu blue, and continue hoping for the best.
