This document is a paper submitted for a Master's degree that examines Korean identity and conceptualizations of foreigners in South Korea. It conducts 21 qualitative interviews with younger South Koreans to investigate how their sense of Korean identity may influence views of non-Koreans. The paper hypothesizes that stronger identification with being Korean positively correlates with viewing non-Koreans as foreign, creating distance between Koreans and others. It aims to provide insights into how a multicultural Korean society can be constructed by understanding Korean perspectives on identity and foreigners. Key concepts discussed include social emphasis on Korean identity at the individual level and social reinforcement of identity between Koreans, which may position Koreans in a privileged place over non-Koreans.
