INTRODUCTION
• The flavivirus member known as the dengue virus is the cause of the vector-borne disease Dengue.
• Clinical symptoms of dengue infection ranged from asymptomatic infection or a straightforward
viral sickness to dengue shock syndrome.
• The cornerstone of care is early identification and recognition of severe dengue illnesses such
dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.
• In recent years, dengue has been a serious health problem in India, which has contributed
significantly to mortality and morbidity. The severe side effects including shock syndrome,
hemorrhagic symptoms, and severe thrombocytopenia, are the main causes of this death. So, we
must pinpoint the patients who will all experience these issues.
• With the commencement of plasma leakage, multiple serum biochemical parameter abnormalities
take place in patients with severe dengue infection; these derangements are not seen in patients
with non-severe dengue. This investigation examined the relationship between serum calcium
levels and disease severity in dengue patients

AIM
• To determine the correlation between serum calcium and disease
severity in dengue patients.

OBJECTIVES
• To study the clinical profile of dengue fever patients.
• To estimate the significance of serum calcium levels as an indicator of severity in
dengue fever.

METHODOLOGY
• Study Design - Cross sectional study.
• Study period - 18 months.
• Sample size -
• The sample size (n) is calculated according to the formula: n = (Z^2 * σ^2) / E^2
• Population standard deviation (σ): 0.52
• Margin of error (E): 0.1 (10%)
• Confidence level (assumed 95%): z-score = 1.96
• Calculation
• n = (1.96^2 * 0.52^2) / 0.1^2

• Study population- Patients admitted in KGMCH medicine ward with dengue fever, who are fulfilling the
inclusion and exclusion criteria.

INCLUSION CRITERIA
• Patients aged 13 years and above with confirmed dengue infection who were
diagnosed using NS1 antigen and/or IgM antibody tests and were classified
according to WHO criteria
• Patients who have not received calcium supplements or medications known to
affect calcium levels during the study period.
• Patients without co-morbidities, as long as they meet other inclusion criteria and
have dengue fever.

EXCLUSION CRITERIA
• Patients with pre-existing hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism.
• Patients with chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, cardiac and
liver diseases
• Patients receiving calcium supplements or medications known to affect calcium
levels, such as thiazide diuretics or corticosteroids.
• Patients with concurrent infections other than dengue fever, as these may also
affect serum calcium levels and confound the

DATA COLLECTION AND STUDY
• Details of the patient and presenting complaints like fever duration, presence of
giddiness, abdominal pain, bleeding manifestations, altered sensorium,
restlessness etc. Were collected interviewer administered questionnaire.
• The clinical parameters recorded were pertaining to evidence of hemodynamic
instability(pulse volume, blood pressure, pulse pressure, presence of cold
extremities) evidence of fluid leakage (pleural effusion and ascites).
• In addition, the following investigations were performed in first 24 hours of
admission: Haemoglobin, Total leucocyte count, platelet count, Serum free
calcium in dengue fever packed cell volume, Renal function tests – urea,
creatinine, liver function tests – S.Bilirubin, S.Albumin, Aspartate
aminotransferase (AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total calcium and serum
free calcium levels
• The analysis of the data will be Done Using Appropriate Statistical Methods.

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS
• Complete Haemogram
• Renal function tests – urea, creatinine,
• Liver function tests – S.Bilirubin, S.Albumin, Aspartate aminotransferase (AST),
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT),
• Total calcium and corrected serum calcium levels

• Patients with severe dengue illness found to have hypocalcemia
