Discuss The Impact Of The Great Schism On American Society
In the fourteenth and fifteenth century, the spread of a deadly plague, the upheaval of the Hundred
Years' War, and the Great Schism has made an impact on the social and economic structure of the
society. The positive and negative consequences have changed the way the people lived their lives;
however lifestyles vary by where the people stand in the social hierarchy. For the nobility, having a
superior status and a fortune can put you in a finer, more privileged position in the social order. The
men had access to more advanced weapons and artillery, along with training that developed their
fighting skills. However, the nobles abused their status by committing crimes against the peasantry.
They were able to get away with their felonies by corrupting

The Pardoner's Cap Analysis
The Pardoner's Cap
The most intriguing artifact in the Canterbury Tales is the Pardoner's cap; specifically, the replica of
the Veil of Veronica sown in the cap. Two major reasons the cap is so intriguing are: the significance
of Christianity during this time, and the irony and hypocrisy of the Pardoner. The Veil of Veronica
was a piece of cloth said to hold the true image of Christ. During the crucifixion it was said the St
Veronica wiped Jesus' face with a cloth and an image of his likeness was forever imprinted on it.
The impact Christianity and the church had during the 14th century cannot be overstated. Priests
were supposed to preach the word of God and be the perfect examples of what it meant to be a good
Christian. Which is why it is so ironic that there isn't a character in the Canterbury Tales more
despicable than the Pardoner. The Pardoner was a priest who made a living offering indulgences to
the people. In order to receive an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It gave insight into the event in which the Veil of Veronica was created. When studying the stations
of the cross I came upon the link to this specific article. The article was on a website called New
Advent. It explains the events leading to and during Christ's crucifixion. After reading you will learn
that the wiping of Christ's face by St Veronica was, in fact, the sixth station of the cross. Learning
that the Veil was an artifact that touched the face of the most influential figure in the history of the
world shows why it was so significant and why it was a symbol of the Christian faith. This article
was edited and by the head of the website Kevin Knight. I did a lot of cross references with the
information and found the article to be factual and accurate. This explains who priests like the
Pardoner would have replicas of the Veil sown on their caps. The irony in the story though was that
the Pardoner was corrupt and nothing like

The During The Reign Of Henry Viii
During the reign of Henry VIII, England had witnessed the most dramatic enforcement of the power
of the king. The events leading up to the English Reformation were the catalyst for major changes
with the political and religious power of the king that would be carried on throughout English
history. The problems that the Medieval English Church faced were some of the major reasons why
the reformation took place.Even though there were external factors that influenced the separation of
the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church, many of the internal problems that the
Medieval church faced helped shape the mindset of the English people to want reform. Since a great
portion of English society was based around the church, the ongoing conflict between the church
and the king, anti–clericalism , and internal problems within the Catholic Church played a major role
in the onset of the English Reformation.
One of the first major problems that the church faced was the Great Schism. From 1387 to 1417,
three men were considered to be the pope, which had never happened in Catholic history before. In
1305, the papacy was moved to Avignon, France and began taxing bishops and cardinals, and the
bishops and cardinals taxed the priests, who in turn demanded money from churchgoers. The reason
why they were being taxed was because the papacy was no longer center in Rome. The Avignon
papacy developed a reputation for corruption and greed, which caused for there to be a need for the

The Great Schism of 1054 that occurred in the Catholic Church has left a once united people
separated because of conflict. These issues that tore them apart are still true today and the relations
between Catholics and Orthodox Christians has yet to be repaired.
The Eastern Schism was a result of many problems but it was largely a struggle between two main
churches; the Western Church located in Rome, and the Eastern Church that was centered in
Constantinople. Barbarian invaders, who were on a mission to recapture their lands, were a main
influence on the separation of the Roman Empire of the time. When Diocletian named two Capitals
to his empire, Rome and Constantinople, it made communication very difficult and inadvertently led

The Pope supported Ignatius over Photius and because of this he became outraged with the Latin
Church. He condemned Western theology and practice. His biggest issue was the Western Church's
addition of the phrase "and from the Son" (filioque) to the Nicene Creed (Pennock 113). The Eastern
Church was completely against this phrase and object that the Holy Spirit came through the Son, not
from the Son. A conclusive split occurred when in the 11th century when Popes began to assert their
authority over the whole Church under German emperors. This gave rise to a figure by the name of
Michael Cerularius who preached a strong and violent anti–Latin attitude. He like others before him
were angered by the filoque (and from the Son) clause that was added to the Nicene Creed.
Additionally, he was extremely opposed to the Western tradition of clerical celibacy (priest allowed
to be married after ordination) and the unleavened bread used for Eucharist. He took it to the extent
of closing all Latin Churches in Constantinople and excommunicating any priest that gave mass in
Latin. This was the final straw in the rift between the East and the West (Latin vs. Greek). This
effectively marks the split between the two sides.
A positive relationship between the two Christian groups has not been restored though there have
been efforts to do so. IN the years shortly after the schism, there were attempts to restore a
connection through councils such as the Second Council of Lyons

How Did The Western Schism Affect The Catholic Church
The Western Schism:
And Its Impact on the Catholic Church
Jacob Stickney
Western Civilization II
Professor Jennifer Fast
November 14, 2016
The Catholic Church's response to the Western Schism was vastly important to its respectability and
authority in regards to the faithful of that time. "The Western Schism was only a temporary
misunderstanding, even though it compelled the Church for forty years to seek its true head; it was
fed by politics and passions, and was terminated by the assembling of the councils of Pisa and
Constance."1 After the Avignon Papacy, the Catholic Church had three men claiming to be pope.
One man elected in Rome, one in Avignon, France, and one elected by the Council of Pisa. This was
very detrimental to the Catholic theology which states that it can trace every pope back to St. Peter,
the first pope. The Catholic faithful were not sure which of the three men was the true pope and
which, if any of them, they should listen to. It was a very confusing time for all the faithful living in
this time, and a very annoying situation for the true pope who was now seen by many to be as
questionable as the other two in regards to not being the true pope. The three men knew what a mess
this situation was and two of them wanted to deal with the situation, so as to reduce confusion
among the faithful. The anti–pope John XXIII called the Council of Constance to deal with this
situation. He offered to resign from the papacy, that he was never in possession of, if the other two
men would as well. The council met to depose of the two anti–popes, to deal with heretical
teachings, and to protect the succession of the papacy. This council is one of the most important
ecumenical councils, as it helped to affirm the succession of the pope and to help to resolve the
confusion caused by these anti–popes. The Council of Constance was called in 1414 by the Anti–
Pope John XXIII. It was called to resolve the conflict regarding the papacy and to identify the true
successor of St. Peter. Between November 1414 and June 1415, the council had a total of 13
sessions, dealing with the papacy and how the pope was chosen. The council, "enacted Haec Sancta

The Great Schism: Change In Europe During 14th Century Europe
Finally, the last concept that is crucial to the change in Europe during 14th century Europe is the
Great Schism. The Great Schism represented a division between the church due to 3 individuals
each claiming papacy and accusing the others of heresy. There were significant reforms that
occurred in the church due to this event. Initially, to solve the of having multiple popes an
agreement was made at the Council of Constance to practice conciliarism. However, this concept
was ultimately undermined by Pope Martin. The major result of the Great Schism was the growth of
national churches. Before the Great Schism, the pope had more power over the rulers and their
domains. However, after the Great Schism, Popes were forced to surrender their power

The Great Papal Schism In The Roman Catholic Church
The Great Papal Schism The Great Papal Schism is also known as the Western Schism that lasted
from 1378 – 1417, during which the papacy (the position itself) was in great divide between three
popes in the Roman Catholic Church. This political upheaval within the Roman Catholic Church
caused distrust of the western civilization towards the church. It began after the Avignon Papacy or
the more commonly referred to, "Babylonian captivity of the papacy" which was when the papal
court was moved to France and French cardinals who later became popes from 1309–1378 resided
in Avignon, France (a total of seven French popes by the papal names Clement V all the way to
Gregory XI, who moved the court back to Rome) while being heavily influenced by the French
kings; this also resulted to the decline of the papal power and authority (Miller, Study.com).
The Babylonian captivity ended after the death of Gregory XI in 1378, with the deposition of the
papal court from France back to Rome to end the upheaval within the holy city. The movement of
the church from Rome to France caused so much disturbance in Rome that when Gregory moved the
papal court back to Rome, the people were demanding that an Italian pope be elected after Gregory's
death. This led to the election of Urban VI, whose non–papal name was Bartolommeo Prignano, and
was chosen by the cardinals. However, the city was in major turmoil from the so–called Babylonian
captivity that the Vatican palace (or papal palace) was stormed

The Great Schism Of 1054 Chapter Summary
The Great Schism of 1054 The Great Schism of 1054 was the separation of what is now the Eastern
Orthodox Churches and the Western Roman Catholic Churches. In the book, The Orthodox Church,
Timothy Ware explains several reasons that influence the separation of these two churches.
Ware explains how the Great Schism happened gradually over time, where Catholicism would
slowly branch away from the Eastern Side. He specifically pointed out that starting in 1009, the new
Pope's on the western part of Europe were not included in the Constantinopolitan Patriarch list of all
the great Patriarchs, or the Diptychs. Since all of this started in 1009, Ware believes that this is the
"real" date of the Great Schism. The Diptychs are "a visible sign of unity

The Black Death Of The Middle Ages
As the middle ages came to a close, political theologians set forth a series of political ideologies that
would help shape modern day democracy. The Black Death greatly affected the beliefs of the power
in Catholic Church. With seemingly randomly mass death of the young and old, the peasant class
began to revolt. While unrest occurred throughout Western Europe events like the conciliar
movement called into question the emerging conceptions of limitations on rulers' power. Theologian
including John Wycliffe, William of Ockham, and Christine de Pizan all captured the number
political ideas of the time. The events that defined this period in history helped shape what we have
come to know and trust in our government.
During the time the Black Death swept Western Europe, questions of who's authority was supreme
to the land arouse. "Disaffection with the church, or the thought that it might be not be true or the
only way to salvation, spread in all ranks of society. It was not only kings who disputed the claims
of the clergy. Obscure parish priests, close to the distress of ordinary people, began to doubt the
power of their ecclesiastical superiors" (p. 47 of "Disasters of the Fourteenth Century" Handout).
Theologians across Europe set forth ideals for a church to hold councils to in order to constitute the
ideals of the entire Christian population. "John of Paris in his (On Royal and Papal Power) agreed
that a general council could depose the pope on the grounds that it

Gender Roles In The Great Gatsby And Tiffany's Society
Gatsby and Tiffany's both explore a sexual upper class that hides behind propriety in lieu of
expressing their desires, and a promiscuous rising class that is more forward about their sexuality,
but fail to make meaningful connections. Yet, even at the beginning of a modern era in America,
both classes adhere to traditional gender roles that provide a struggle to escape the sexual tradition
that molded the country.
Daisy from The Great Gatsby and José from Breakfast at Tiffany's mask their sexual desires despite
being inherently sexual themselves. The Great Gatsby follows a man named Jay Gatsby who is
madly in love with his past lover, Daisy. Daisy is a member of the establishment, as she was born
into her wealth. Gatsby, a rising class bachelor, has an aching desire to be with Daisy, and Daisy,
who once reciprocated these feelings, married an establishment man named Tom. Daisy received
news that Gatsby was enlisted in the military right before she married tom. Jordan, another elite
character, recounts this day, noting how much Daisy "cried and cried" at the realization that she is in
love with Gatsby and not Tom, exemplifying a divergence from the establishment that she
desperately attempts to maintain. After her episode, "she didn't say another word" and Jordan
"hooked her back into her dress", which hooks her back into a proper life in the established elite.
She also wore her "pearls around her neck", further enforcing the masking of her sexual desires
through propriety

The Changes in the Catholic Church during the High Middle...
In the year 1378, the Roman Catholic Church became divided when the King of France decided to
replace the current Italian Pope with one that he elected. During the Great Schism, there were two
popes claiming authority over the Catholic Church. Following the split, the papal offices began to
lose their authority. Ultimately, the cardinals of both popes decided that an ecumenical council of
godly men could collectively possess more divine authority that just one pope. In 1409 at the
council of Pisa, the church council was asked to elect a new pope that would unite the sides,
meaning there would be three popes. Now, there was Pope Urban VI from Italy, Pope Clement VII
from France, and the new member, Pope Alexander V. Neither the Roman or French popes were
willing to give up their power, now creating a three way battle for the church's authority. From
1414–1418, the Council of Constance was successful in healing the Schism, leading to the
resignation of the Roman Pope. The schism was healed and there was room for an election of a
single pope, Pope Martin V, who reigned from 1417–1431. The Great Schism of the West introduced
a newly expanded authority for the general councils of the church.
Furthermore, during this time, the church was undergoing a cleansing process regarding the different
religions that were practiced. Now, women were active participants in the spiritual movements of
the age. The amount if women joining religious houses increased rapidly as new

In today's global job force, competition with foreign countries is rising. The world and its economy
have changed since the origin days of the American Dream, but the common aspirations of the
American people have not faltered. The Dream is tangible, but it is true that it is becoming harder
and harder to reach and live it. In today's world, it is almost as if the Dream is on hold for those born
into the lower and middle class. Some will always be born into wealth with the world at their
fingertips, but hard work will always pay off. While it is true that success is more difficult in today's
times, the American people still do as they always have and persevere. Prosperity may be harder to
reach, but that just means harder work and more dedication is required. The American Dream is the
shared philosophy of the American people, and very much a reality. F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel
The Great Gatsby deals with many of the social and philosophical intricacies associated with the
American Dream. Written during a time of strong social division, the American Dream was the
aspiration of success and wealth for the common man. Manifesting itself in a luxurious lifestyle,
Fitzgerald's American Dream in the novel represents wealth and all the bells and whistles that go

The Great Schism Essay
The crises of the Catholic Church were the Great Schism. It started five months after Urban's
election of the thirteen cardinals, all but one of them French, formed their own conclave and elected
Pope Clement, a cousin of the French king. The both of them insisted they had voted for Urban in
fear of their lives, having been surrounded by a Roman mob demanding the election of an Italian
pope. This became a scandal to Christendom, and the allegiance to the two papal courts divided
along political lines. Like England and its allies acknowledge d Urban VI, while France and its orbit
supported Clement VII.
Now they had to make approaches to end the schism. They first thought to attempt to win the mutual
cession of both popes, so it would clear the way for the election of a new one. The other idea was to
secure the resignation of the one in favor of the other. But at the end, both of the approaches failed
and now each pop considered himself fully legitimate, and too much was at stake for either to make
a magnanimous concession. They realized that there was now only one way, to go to a special
church council empowered to depose of them both.
In legal terms, only a pope was allowed to convene and dissolve a church council and the competing

What Caused The Great Schism Of 1054
To understand what caused The Great Schism of 1054, it is important to first have a background
knowledge of who was involved. The divide occurred among the land, with a west side and an east
side. The western side was inhabited by Romans and spanned from current Portugal over to
Hungary, also including the more northern countries from Ireland to Sweden. These borders were
frequently changed throughout history, although their principal area was always that of the German
states. This area was referred to as the Holy Roman Empire. The Eastern area, on the other hand,
were inhabited by Greeks and the area was often referred to as the Byzantium Empire. The empire
included current Russia and Bulgaria. These countries together formed the Eastern Slavic
Principalities, with their capital based out of Constantinople. Apart from the geological differences,
there were also political and lingual differences between the East and West. Communication was
difficult between the Greek–speaking East and the Latin–speaking West, as the church and other
leaders no longer read, let alone spoke the language of the other half of the Christian world. The
language barrier separated the civilizations greatly. Apart from lingual differences, there were also
political differences within both the church and the empires. Both sides had differing views on who
should hold power in the church. On the eastern side, the Byzantine emperor was also the leader in
the church. His name was Michael Cerularius,

A Schism Was The Cause Of The Great Schism
The Christian church was split between the Pope of Rome and the Patriarch of Constantinople, each
holding different opinions on religious policy, namely ikons. The two branches moved further and
further apart until they became the separate Roman Catholic and Eastarn Orthodox churches in an
event called the Great Schism.
A schism is a religious divide or conflict, and a great one would have great impact on the fate of its
religion. A schism was already forming between the Pope and Patriarch, whose powers were
unbalanced and views were not alike. What finally caused the Great Schism was the issue of ikons–
images of the divine used in worship–and iconoclasm–the disapproval of that practice. The Pope
favored practice with ikons, and would be

Characteristics Of The Renaissance
The beginning of the renaissance started in the 1400's in Florence. Many turned towards Humanism
which was an emphasis on man's qualities and power. Idealistic realism was showed through the
paintings in this time. Idealistic realism was a way of painting people as real as possible, to how
they would look like in life. Michelangelo demonstrated this technique through his statue, The
David. The Renaissance also focused on what is now called the "ideal renaissance man", which was
an athletic looking, handsome, and intelligent man. During this time, the Caravel was invented,
which was a large boat used mostly for exploration. This was a new way to spread the ideas and also
expand territory. These were the same boats that Columbus used to found North America. Another
key event during this time was the Spanish Inquisition. Spain decided that they only wanted
Catholics in there country so the soon used violence to convert the Muslims and Jews to
Catholicism. Soon most of Spain had become Catholic. These are just a few of the characteristics of
the Renaissance, which all connect together and in short, shape the decisions of the people of this
time. The 15th century was filled with many religious complications and many of the new moral
standards and lifestyles were affected by the disasters that occurred in the 14th century. There was
the Western Schism, church corruption, and the Spanish Inquisition, all of which changed the church
to the modern sense they are now. Throughout the

Supply Chain Case Study: Tim Hortons
1. When I was eating at Tim Hortons today, I noticed that there were boxes stacked on top of each

not need to be placed in the pantry room inside the shop. The presence of a moving dolly/cart
indicates that it was recently used to transfer boxes from one place to another (truck > pantry room

Two Great Schism Essay
There were actually two great schisms, and both contributed to the protestant reformation. The first
happened in 1054, and began as many conflicts did in those days, with an invasion. The Norman
invasion of Sicily and Rome took place in ____ And Pope Leo IX and some dude named Arygos or
sonthing raised an army together (Basically for the pope and for the emporer) to combat the Norman
threat. However, there were already high tensions happening in the catholic churches between the
byzentine empire and the Holy roman version. The Byzentine or greek peeps who mainly resided in
Greece and Italy after conquering it (Evne though Byrentyne was at a very differnt place closer to
the middle east) had some issues with how the romans ran the christian religion. Thy did things
differently, and so cultures obviously clashed. The main issue was that one of the leaders of the
byzentine version of christianty was a dude named klaryguls or something and he wasn't into arygos
so when arygos raised an army with the pope to combat the normans, he was petty and banned some
latin churches. The pope, in exile, defeated and captured by the Normans, couldn;t do much as he

Essay on The Great Schism
The Great Schism
During the late 14th century and the early 15th century there was a great division in the Catholic
Church. The Papacy was becoming blurred. The center of the Roman Catholic Church had been
moved from Rome to the city of Avignon during the reign of Pope Clement V; and there was now a
movement to return the center of power back to Rome. This movement was first truly seen under
Pope Gregory XI and his successor Pope Urban VI. Earlier Pope Urban V had moved the center to
Rome but it had been proven to be no more than a temporary idea; he had gone back to Avignon to
die and there his replacement, Pope Gregory XI was elected . This along with other political
problems and circumstances created a split in the loyalty among ... Show more content on

Pope Clement VII was also the cousin of the French king, which insured that the church would be
under French influence. The cardinals insisted that they had to elect a new pope, Pope Clement VII,
because the election of Pope Urban VI was not valid. They were coerced into electing the Roman
pope for fear of their lives; a mob of Italians outside of the conclave that elected Pope Urban VI had
threatened to massacre the cardinals if a foreigner was chosen as the replacement for Gregory XI.
None the less the Papacy was now divide. The saying "United we stand, while divided we fall." is
very valid in this instance. The church is having many problems around this time period and many
people are converting, or shale we say shifting, to other forms or Christianity. Whereas before these
problems occurred the church was the central power in Western Europe and had great influence over
the governments in their sphere of power. This event, the schism, caused a split in the Catholic
Church and divided countries among the two popes. "Everyone realized that the schism resulting
from the counter–election of Cardinal Robert of Geneva as Pope Clement VII . . . was a tragedy for
the church . . ."
England, the Holy Roman Empire, Hungary Roman Empire, Bohemia, and Poland supported Pope
Urban VI. While Pope Clement VII had gained support from France, Napales, Scotland, Castile, and

What Is Evil In Dante's Inferno
In the Inferno, Canto XXVII, Dante comes across the Sowers of Scandal and Schism while on his
journey through hell. Dante, the poet, reveals that schism and scandal cause division within family
and community. The sinners must walk in an endless cycle of punishment. Their bodies are cut up
by the sword of a devil, only to heal and come back to be sliced again. These sinners are aware of
certain things going on in the world, but they can only contact the living through Dante the pilgrim.
There idea of helping the living reveals their inability to recognize their sins and why they are in
hell. Through poetic imagery and narration, Dante uses a comparison to the battle of Puglia, the

that Bertran himself is his own light, realizing his own sin. He is aware that he has made himself

Great Schism Dbq
In 1054, the Great Schism occurred between the Roman Catholics and the Orthodox Christians,
when the Pope first excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople. Not long after that, the
Patriarch excommunicated the Pope, causing the split. There were many issues prior that created the
Great Schism between the east and west both before and after 1054. It would appear from the
documentation that the east had more issues with how the west conducted the church. The issues
that caused the Schism between the two churches happened prior to 1054, but more issues occurred
after the split. Before the split occurred, there were multiple differences that the Latin Catholics and

In 1136, a man named Nicetas stated that "The Roman Church separated herself by her pretensions.
She became a monarchy." (Document 2) The document goes further and explains that the Roman
Pope has become more of a supreme ruler, hurls orders at the people and even judges them. That is
not the way to rule the church, but to let the supreme God rule instead of man. Later, in 1205, Greek
citizens wrote when the church was ruled by a Latin Emperor, "Since then, small is the gap between
Latins (Catholics) and Greeks which loosen the unity of the one church," (Document 6) The citizens
wish for the union of the two churches, but it remains in denial, and talks about how the two
separate churches are leading to the division of the one church. In 1274, a Byzantine diplomat who
agreed to the reunion of the churches, named Metochites, said "Should we who are prounionists
simply because we favor union with Rome be subjected to being called supporters of a foreign
nation and not Byzantine patriots?" (Document 7) This man is in favor of the reunion with Rome,
but pushes the fact that by being in favor, that they no longer want their own religion and are
considered a Westerner. He simply wishes for reunion with the Catholics. Finally, in 1349, the
Serbian Law Code states in article 6 that "any Christians who have turned to unleavened bread, let

The Great Schism Of 1054: Western Catholic Church And...
Schism of 1054
The Great Schism occurred in 1054 when the Western Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox
Church split, slicing the religion in two. The conflict materialized for many reasons, but mainly the
disagreements of the power of the Pope and the language difference of the West and East. The East
believed in an ecumenical patriarch heavily disputing the power of the Pope. The West thought the
Pope deserved full power, hence the name Power of the Pope. Moreover, while trying to argue about
the power of the Pope, they couldn't understand each other, posing another dilemma.
In the East, Greek was used in the Church, whereas Latin was used in the West. This obviously
created misunderstandings, and eventually disputes, between the two.

Factors that Cause The Great Schism Essay examples
Factors that Cause The Great Schism Part A Introduction The first major division in Christianity
took place in 1054 CE between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. This event is known as
the Great Schism. The two areas of disagreement that caused the division were: * Who should be
leader of the Christian Church? * The way in which the Trinity was to be understood. Christians in
the West believed that the Pope should be the leader of the Christian Church. This was because he
was the successor to St Peter. The Christians in the east did not agree with this. They could not
accept that only one person could have the authority to decide the church matters. Landmarks ...

apostles of Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church is the biggest of the Christian denominations and has
members all over the world. The word 'Catholic' means universal and the Roman Catholic Church

Causes Of The Great Schism
Was the Great Schism a good thing?
The Greek and Roman empires were two different and unique places to live. Even though they had
many differences, they also had many similarities with one another. One of the biggest similarities
between these two great empires was they both practiced the religion of Christianity. People may not
know but they practiced different types of Christianity in these two empires. The Romans would
practice in Catholic churches while the Greeks would practice in the Orthodox church. The reason
for these two churches to split up was because of an event called the Great Schism which caused
Christianity to split into these two churches. Many people at the time might say that this was a good
thing, others might say it's a bad thing. The schism caused many different event to occur. According
to the documents, assumption of power and rivalry over land was the causes of the schism, churches
blaming each other and ill treatment were its effects. One of the events that lead to the schism was
that one church had more power that the other. As it states in Document 1, "If he wishes to judge us
and even rule us and our church, not by taking council with us but his own arbitrary" (Document 1).
This quote is said by an Orthodox Archbishop named Nicomedia. In other words, Nicomedia s
trying to say that the Roman Catholic church things it has more power than the Greek Orthodox
church. Nicomedia complains that the Catholic church is trying to take over the Orthodox

Byzantine Empire: The Great Schism Of 1054
Before the era of the Byzantine Empire, the Roman Empire had disagreements about their faith and
religion. They encountered differences that eventually caused them to split in two. The Byzantine
Empire was successful in discovering the Orthodox Christian religion and building a new empire
that preserved Roman laws. Without the great schism, Roman laws would've been forgotten and
there would not have been the exploration of a new religion.
The Great Schism of 1054 was when the Roman Empire split into halves, to the Roman Empire
(which was Catholic) to the west, and the Byzantine Empire (which was Orthodox) to the east. This
schism was caused by quarrels about their religion. They believed in different things when it came

Constantine was the first emperor to tolerate Christianity. As time went on and the empire became
under the rule of Justinian, one of the most beautiful architectures in Europe, the Hagia Sophia, was
built. As more adjustments were being made to the empire, one of the biggest changes was
expansion. The Byzantine Empire started to conquer more of the land to the west and had started
expanding the empire to the point where it included Italy, Sicily, North Africa, southern Spain,
Syria, Greece, Italy, Egypt, and North Africa. The location of the capital, Constantinople, eventually
made it become extremely successful and wealthy. This was because the empire brought together
Europe and Asia, and Constantinople started to play an important role in the spice trade routes.
Through the trade routes, they were able to exchange silk, cloth, gold, fish, caviar, leather, spices,
stones, and etc. from all over the Asia. The empire's growth lead to the spread of Christianity.
Unfortunately, due to the empire's expansion and how large it was, the Byzantine Empire
encountered many difficulties. There was much more land for the military to guard, especially after
Justinian had built the twelve mile border of walls and because so many people were trying to
overthrow the empire in greed. An example would be the Barbarian people, who wanted to take over
the Byzantine Empire and its capital for the land, power, and wealth. Even though the Byzantine
Empire gained access to more resources, the resources were used up due to how many people were a
part of the empire. In 532–537, while under the rule of Justinian, one of the most beautiful
architectures in Europe was built. This architecture was known by the name the Hagia Sophia,

The Protestant Reformation And The Reformation
In 1527, King Henry VIII of England filed for divorce from his wife, Catherine. As insignificant as
this event may seem, it actually marked the beginning of a religious and political reform from the
corrupted Roman Catholic Church: the English Reformation. The English Reformation wasn't the
only movement that led to the separation from the Catholic Church, though. The Protestant
Reformation, starting only ten years before the English Reformation did, first recognized the
corruption of the Catholic Church. The English Reformation noticed the corruptions of the Catholic
Church, but was more focused on creating new political and religious authority. Both of these
reformations relate to one another greatly, but are still considered to be individual movements. Papal
authority was stripped during these reformations, and all of Europe lived differently afterwards.
While Catholicism still existed after the reformations and is still practiced today, many new
religions exist today as an effect of the reformations. The political power that the Church held
diminished and was replaced by the English state. Both the Protestant Reformation and English
Reformation impacted the political power and religion of the Catholic Church and all of Europe.
Without these movements, Christian religion would not be what it is today. The corruption in the
Catholic Church started long before the Protestant Reformation and English Reformation; the first
real sign of corruption began in 1377,

India is renowned as an incubator of religion. The South Asian nation's countless sects have it
widely known for its deep, abiding spirituality. In some respects, the story of India is the story of
conflict among the most abided of these faiths. Even today, India's political landscape is defined by
the struggle between those who would insist that religion is nationality (Islam) and those who
maintain that, as a historical entity, India is essentially Hindu and all other faiths are interlopers.
India is replete with the history and shrines of the Hindu faith, though its most famous shrine, the

BUDDHISM BEFORE ASHOKA Early Buddhism was wracked with factionalism in the century
following the death of Gautama Buddha, a situation that did not improve with the convocation of the
Second Buddhist Council. Primarily, the dissention within Buddhism stemmed from disagreement
over asceticism as a necessary part of monastic life, with certain sects advocating the strict
discipline commonly associated with the wandering monks of Hinduism and others embracing the
ostensibly Bacchanal yet introspective ethic most associated by Westerners with The Buddha.
Naturally, many controversies arose over these competing narratives concerning the nature of The
Buddha, and, though each camp has since split into the myriad disciplines Buddhism is known for
today, every succeeding schism is an analog of the first, a battle between the essentially Indian (and
therefore Hindu) ideal of Vinaya and the dogged quest for Dharma.

The Great Schism, also Known as the East-West Division
People separate and then reunited; people quarrel and then reconciled. Similarly, Christianity also
has separation reunion, argument and reconciliation. Christianity was started as one body, and then
multiple factors gradually contributed to the split of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman
Catholic Church. Some of these factors are such as the different understanding of Christianity, the
different point of views toward the authority of the Pope and the different ideas of governing the
Church. All the different thoughts created the disagreement between the two branches of Church. In
other words, the conflict came up, and eventually led to the Great Schism. The differences between

Moreover, The differences between the government and doctrine of these two churches were also an
important cause of the split. According to the Eastern Orthodox, the Pope has the "authority is thus
no greater or lesser than any of his fellow Bishops in the Church."(Hallam 11). The main idea of this
is that the Pope and Bishops have an equal authority. Oppositely, the Roman Catholic agreed," The
Pope is the 'Vicar of Christ'."(Hallam 11). In other words, the Pope is head of the Church and he
holds supreme authority in Christendom. This makes it obvious that the two churches disagree with
each other on the way of governing the Church. "Rome preferred an almost ³business–like´
terseness; Constantinople delighted in³diffuse poetical rhapsodies interspersed with prayer."
(Moreover, "Roman Catholicism teaches that human reason can prove that God is; and, even infer
that He is eternal, infinite, good, bodiless, almighty, all–knowing, etc." (Azkoul), the Roman
Catholic governed the Church with more logic than the Eastern Orthodox. In other words, the
Roman Catholic Church tried to examine every question, and wanted to give every question a
logical answer. For example, "At the same time, the Latins interpret the Sacraments in a legal and
philosophical way"(Azkoul). In addition, the Roman Catholic Church restricted the follower to live
and act in a particular way in order to show the idea of "catholic" which means universal.

The Causes Of The Black Death
European civilizations developed most of their foundations during the eleventh, twelfth and
thirteenth centuries. During this time, the Catholic Church reached its climax. By the fourteenth
century however, a devastating number of catastrophes resulted in the destruction of medieval
civilization. The Black Death, a devastating plague, was the most destructive natural disaster in
European history. Following in its wake were numerous economic and social crises, including
political unrest during the Hundred Years' War. The Catholic Church also experienced its own crisis.
All of these economic, social and political issues shook Europe to its core, but not enough to
crumble its resilient foundation. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, Europe began to
experience a change in weather patterns that shortened growing seasons that resulted in widespread
famine and hunger. This in turn contributed to citizens having a higher susceptibility to disease due
to malnourishment, especially evident when the Black Death struck Europe. The Black Death, an
epidemic of the bubonic plague, swept through Europe in the mid–fourteenth century causing social,
political and cultural turmoil. Genoese merchants brought the plague to Sicily, off the coast of Italy,
which then made its way through commercial trade routes all the way into Spain and France
(Spielvogel). At the time, no one knew how the plague was transmitted from person to person.
Ultimately, one–third of the European population was

The Great Schism And The Separation Of Christianity
Great post! Your forum is a very good read and I really enjoyed the sequential analysis given. I
agree with you that the Great Schism is the separation of Christianity and the result of a dispute of
authority. According to Walton (2005), the American Baptist tree is a child–like example (chart 119)
of what the Prophet Hose 4:6 says "the priest who rejected knowledge, the people will be destroyed
and their children will not be remembered because of the forsaking of the order of God." We find
from chart 119 that beginning from1639– to the present, the Great Schisms. For example, Roger
Williams was ordained in the Anglican Church but moved towards Separatism because he seeks
liberty of conscience. Meaning he was opposed to the American Revolution because of the oath of
loyalty to King sacred according to scripture" (Walton, 2005, chart 101). Similar, to both the Latins
and Greeks implying each should submit to the adopting of the others belief. ... Show more content

Protestant Reformation and Literature "For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every

Reformation was a great schism from the Roman Catholic Church initiated by Martin Luther. He
was widely acknowledged to have started the Reformation with his 1517 work "The Ninety–Five
Theses" in which he began by criticizing the selling of indulgences, insisting that the Pope had no
authority over purgatory and that Catholic doctrine of the merits of the saints had no further
foundation in the Gospel. The Protestant position, however, would come to incorporate doctrinal
changes such as sola scriptura and sola fide. The central drive behind these changes was theological,
though many others factors played a part, including the rise of nationalism, the Western Schism that
eroded people's faith in the Papacy, the impact of humanism and the new learning of the
Renaissance which questioned much of traditional thought. Many humanist were churchmen, most

There have been many religious schisms over the course of human history. Many of these have even
taken place within the Christian faith, such as the Great Schism. However, the purpose of this essay
will be analyzing the Protestant reformation and discussing its causes and effects. Specifically the
causes that led to the separation of the Protestant church from the Catholic; language barriers,
corruption in the church, simony, and lay investiture; and its current effects on the world, both in
America and elsewhere.
First to be discussed are the language barriers of the early Catholic Church. One of the largest

These include wars, and the institution of several new religions and religious orders. A few that this
essay will focus on are the institution of new Catholic religious orders, the many religious wars of
the 1500s, the reestablishment of the inquisition, and the creation of the Protestant church.
First, the new catholic religious orders. According to –––, Martin Luther was not the only man who
wanted reform, and his example gave other men the courage to incite change. Many of these men
succeeded. According to –––, these men include St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits, and St.
Dominic, founder of the Dominicans. However, these changes were permitted by the pope, and thus
they remained members of the Catholic Church.
Second, the religious wars of the 1500s. According to –––, In the mid–1500s, millions of peasants
revolted against their rulers in the name of equality before God. It was because of this spark that
many countries chose to follow the trend of converting to Protestant Christianity. It was through this
decision that Europe was divided into different denominations. However, not all countries were on

The Great Schism of the Church
2005, 2015
July 6, 1054 was rapidly approaching, and the Christian world was about to experience a major
event on the road to a schism that continues to our day – the divide between the Western and Eastern
Christian churches. The central actors in the looming conflict were Michael Cerularius, the patriarch
of Constantinople,1 and Leo IX, the bishop or pope in Rome.
In the months leading up to July 6, 1054, Cerularius had strongly condemned the Western church for
some of its religious practices and beliefs.2 As part of his attack, Cerularius excommunicated the
bishops of Constantinople who followed certain rites of the Western church, and he closed down
their churches.
In April, Leo sent a legation to Cerularius, headed by Cardinal Humbert, with his own set of
demands and accusations against the patriarch. As it turned out, Leo died in the midst of the mission,
but the group continued its task. The meetings between Cardinal Humbert and Patriarch Cerularius
were angry and bitter. Mistrust and a desire to maintain ecclesiastical power ruled the day. No useful
dialogue could occur in such a poisoned atmosphere.
Mutual excommunication
Finally, relations between Cerularius and Humbert were strained to the breaking point. The Roman
legates marched into

I chose to do my paper on Giovanni di Bicci de 'Medici due to the fact that I am an Accounting

an Italian banker and founder of the Medici bank. Giovanni was born in 1360 and unlike his
descendants, Giovanni was not born into wealth. Giovanni was one of five in his family and after his
father, Averardo de' Medici, died not much money was left to the family. Giovanni was also the
great–grandson to another Averardo, who had served as Gonfaloniere in the 14th century.
The beginning of the Medici bank came underway through one of Giovanni's relatives, Vieri di

This huge account that the Medici bank was able to obtain was due to Giovanni's friendship with
Baldassare Cossa. Cardinal Cossa deserted his allegiance to Pope Gregory XII during the Western
Schism and convened the Council of Pisa. His main objective was to end the schism. They tried
deposing of Pope Gregory XII and Antipope Benedict XIII by electing another Pope, Pope
Alexander V in 1409. Gregory and Benedict ignored this decision, so now there were three popes.
Pope Alexander V died soon after which made way for Baldassare himself. Baldassare Cossa was
consecrated as Pope John XXIII in 1410. As friend and supporter of Baldassare Cossa, Giovanni had
previously loaned his money after Baldassare was imprisoned for accusations ranging from murder
to heresy to seducing women. Giovanni used this loan in his own advantageous way because his
reward for his help and loan was Pope John XXIII making the Medici Bank the main bank for the
papal accounts and business. The Rome branch now had control over the curial affairs, all due to
Giovanni backing his friend Baldassare Cossa or Pope John. The Roman branch of the Medici Bank

The Great Schism The Great Schism of 1378 was caused when the papal court, which was based in
Rome, elected an Italian Pope named Pope Urban VI. The French cardinals refused to accept the
Italian Pope so they announced that his election was invalid and elected a new Pope, Pope Clement
VII. Urban VI began to show absence in self control when he criticized the cardinals for their luxury
and laziness and when he revealed his plan of reforming the Church. Urban VI's violent and abusive
treatment towards the cardinals caused them to fear for their lives and believe he was mentally ill;
this lead to the turn against the cardinals to abandon Rome. "At Anagni on August 2 the dissidents
published a manifesto in which they pronounced his election null and void, on the ground that
pressure from the Romans had made a free election impossible"(Great Western Schism). When they
took away the position as Pope from Urban they elected his rival which was Clement VII. ... Show

Early Church Fathers Attitudes Toward Women Essay

the secular, misogynistic society of Rome, Christ's attitude toward women and the doctrine of
equality were purposely forgotten," 21, 34 Following are only a few of the mean–spirited quotes
made by the early church so–called fathers and from modern preachers. This researcher believes this
kind of leadership has instigated erroneous beliefs about women and their place in the Christian
church. Furthermore, it has promoted discrimination against women in general and female clergy in
particular. Quotes are courtesy of John Wijngaards34 (2015) and Valerie Tarico35 (2013). The

Harsher Struggles for African American Women than Men
A religion is a system of beliefs that explains things about the Universe, answers essential
philosophical questions and tells its followers how to live their lives in order to achieve the goal of
that religion, whether it be pleasing the gods of the religion, acquiring salvation from a curse,
punishment, ailment etc. that the religion claims people or persons have or self–betterment. In the
religions of Ancient Egypt, Buddhism and Christianity, a clear link between environment and
religion can be seen. Religion has always been present in large civilizations and is a product of the
environment, climate and geography.
The sun god Ra was the most important and powerful of all in the polytheistic Ancient Egyptian
religion (Shaw, 273). Not many of the images that come to mind when "Egypt" is mentioned contain
clouds, and that is because the land of Egypt has sweltering weather. A direct influence from the
environment can be seen on the religion as the sun had a huge impression of the lives of Ancient
Egyptians and the sun god is the most worshipped and important of all. From their elaborate
mummies and huge pyramids, it can be seen that the Ancient Egyptians concerned themselves a
great deal with the afterlife. They believed that a person would not be able to proceed to the afterlife
without recognising their secular body and therefore as many as could afford it mummified their
relatives. Before mummification became a common practice, it often happened accidentally when

Discuss The Impact Of The Great Schism On American Society

  • 1. Discuss The Impact Of The Great Schism On American Society In the fourteenth and fifteenth century, the spread of a deadly plague, the upheaval of the Hundred Years' War, and the Great Schism has made an impact on the social and economic structure of the society. The positive and negative consequences have changed the way the people lived their lives; however lifestyles vary by where the people stand in the social hierarchy. For the nobility, having a superior status and a fortune can put you in a finer, more privileged position in the social order. The men had access to more advanced weapons and artillery, along with training that developed their fighting skills. However, the nobles abused their status by committing crimes against the peasantry. They were able to get away with their felonies by corrupting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Pardoner's Cap Analysis The Pardoner's Cap The most intriguing artifact in the Canterbury Tales is the Pardoner's cap; specifically, the replica of the Veil of Veronica sown in the cap. Two major reasons the cap is so intriguing are: the significance of Christianity during this time, and the irony and hypocrisy of the Pardoner. The Veil of Veronica was a piece of cloth said to hold the true image of Christ. During the crucifixion it was said the St Veronica wiped Jesus' face with a cloth and an image of his likeness was forever imprinted on it. The impact Christianity and the church had during the 14th century cannot be overstated. Priests were supposed to preach the word of God and be the perfect examples of what it meant to be a good Christian. Which is why it is so ironic that there isn't a character in the Canterbury Tales more despicable than the Pardoner. The Pardoner was a priest who made a living offering indulgences to the people. In order to receive an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It gave insight into the event in which the Veil of Veronica was created. When studying the stations of the cross I came upon the link to this specific article. The article was on a website called New Advent. It explains the events leading to and during Christ's crucifixion. After reading you will learn that the wiping of Christ's face by St Veronica was, in fact, the sixth station of the cross. Learning that the Veil was an artifact that touched the face of the most influential figure in the history of the world shows why it was so significant and why it was a symbol of the Christian faith. This article was edited and by the head of the website Kevin Knight. I did a lot of cross references with the information and found the article to be factual and accurate. This explains who priests like the Pardoner would have replicas of the Veil sown on their caps. The irony in the story though was that the Pardoner was corrupt and nothing like ... • 9. The During The Reign Of Henry Viii During the reign of Henry VIII, England had witnessed the most dramatic enforcement of the power of the king. The events leading up to the English Reformation were the catalyst for major changes with the political and religious power of the king that would be carried on throughout English history. The problems that the Medieval English Church faced were some of the major reasons why the reformation took place.Even though there were external factors that influenced the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church, many of the internal problems that the Medieval church faced helped shape the mindset of the English people to want reform. Since a great portion of English society was based around the church, the ongoing conflict between the church and the king, anti–clericalism , and internal problems within the Catholic Church played a major role in the onset of the English Reformation. One of the first major problems that the church faced was the Great Schism. From 1387 to 1417, three men were considered to be the pope, which had never happened in Catholic history before. In 1305, the papacy was moved to Avignon, France and began taxing bishops and cardinals, and the bishops and cardinals taxed the priests, who in turn demanded money from churchgoers. The reason why they were being taxed was because the papacy was no longer center in Rome. The Avignon papacy developed a reputation for corruption and greed, which caused for there to be a need for the Pope ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Great Schism of 1054 that occurred in the Catholic... The Great Schism of 1054 that occurred in the Catholic Church has left a once united people separated because of conflict. These issues that tore them apart are still true today and the relations between Catholics and Orthodox Christians has yet to be repaired. The Eastern Schism was a result of many problems but it was largely a struggle between two main churches; the Western Church located in Rome, and the Eastern Church that was centered in Constantinople. Barbarian invaders, who were on a mission to recapture their lands, were a main influence on the separation of the Roman Empire of the time. When Diocletian named two Capitals to his empire, Rome and Constantinople, it made communication very difficult and inadvertently led to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Pope supported Ignatius over Photius and because of this he became outraged with the Latin Church. He condemned Western theology and practice. His biggest issue was the Western Church's addition of the phrase "and from the Son" (filioque) to the Nicene Creed (Pennock 113). The Eastern Church was completely against this phrase and object that the Holy Spirit came through the Son, not from the Son. A conclusive split occurred when in the 11th century when Popes began to assert their authority over the whole Church under German emperors. This gave rise to a figure by the name of Michael Cerularius who preached a strong and violent anti–Latin attitude. He like others before him were angered by the filoque (and from the Son) clause that was added to the Nicene Creed. Additionally, he was extremely opposed to the Western tradition of clerical celibacy (priest allowed to be married after ordination) and the unleavened bread used for Eucharist. He took it to the extent of closing all Latin Churches in Constantinople and excommunicating any priest that gave mass in Latin. This was the final straw in the rift between the East and the West (Latin vs. Greek). This effectively marks the split between the two sides. A positive relationship between the two Christian groups has not been restored though there have been efforts to do so. IN the years shortly after the schism, there were attempts to restore a connection through councils such as the Second Council of Lyons ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. How Did The Western Schism Affect The Catholic Church The Western Schism: And Its Impact on the Catholic Church Jacob Stickney Western Civilization II Professor Jennifer Fast November 14, 2016 The Catholic Church's response to the Western Schism was vastly important to its respectability and authority in regards to the faithful of that time. "The Western Schism was only a temporary misunderstanding, even though it compelled the Church for forty years to seek its true head; it was fed by politics and passions, and was terminated by the assembling of the councils of Pisa and Constance."1 After the Avignon Papacy, the Catholic Church had three men claiming to be pope. One man elected in Rome, one in Avignon, France, and one elected by the Council of Pisa. This was very detrimental to the Catholic theology which states that it can trace every pope back to St. Peter, the first pope. The Catholic faithful were not sure which of the three men was the true pope and which, if any of them, they should listen to. It was a very confusing time for all the faithful living in this time, and a very annoying situation for the true pope who was now seen by many to be as questionable as the other two in regards to not being the true pope. The three men knew what a mess this situation was and two of them wanted to deal with the situation, so as to reduce confusion among the faithful. The anti–pope John XXIII called the Council of Constance to deal with this situation. He offered to resign from the papacy, that he was never in possession of, if the other two men would as well. The council met to depose of the two anti–popes, to deal with heretical teachings, and to protect the succession of the papacy. This council is one of the most important ecumenical councils, as it helped to affirm the succession of the pope and to help to resolve the confusion caused by these anti–popes. The Council of Constance was called in 1414 by the Anti– Pope John XXIII. It was called to resolve the conflict regarding the papacy and to identify the true successor of St. Peter. Between November 1414 and June 1415, the council had a total of 13 sessions, dealing with the papacy and how the pope was chosen. The council, "enacted Haec Sancta (fifth session, 15 April 1415), ... • 21. The Great Schism: Change In Europe During 14th Century Europe Finally, the last concept that is crucial to the change in Europe during 14th century Europe is the Great Schism. The Great Schism represented a division between the church due to 3 individuals each claiming papacy and accusing the others of heresy. There were significant reforms that occurred in the church due to this event. Initially, to solve the of having multiple popes an agreement was made at the Council of Constance to practice conciliarism. However, this concept was ultimately undermined by Pope Martin. The major result of the Great Schism was the growth of national churches. Before the Great Schism, the pope had more power over the rulers and their domains. • 25. The Great Papal Schism In The Roman Catholic Church The Great Papal Schism The Great Papal Schism is also known as the Western Schism that lasted from 1378 – 1417, during which the papacy (the position itself) was in great divide between three popes in the Roman Catholic Church. This political upheaval within the Roman Catholic Church caused distrust of the western civilization towards the church. It began after the Avignon Papacy or the more commonly referred to, "Babylonian captivity of the papacy" which was when the papal court was moved to France and French cardinals who later became popes from 1309–1378 resided in Avignon, France (a total of seven French popes by the papal names Clement V all the way to Gregory XI, who moved the court back to Rome) while being heavily influenced by the French kings; this also resulted to the decline of the papal power and authority (Miller, Study.com). The Babylonian captivity ended after the death of Gregory XI in 1378, with the deposition of the papal court from France back to Rome to end the upheaval within the holy city. The movement of the church from Rome to France caused so much disturbance in Rome that when Gregory moved the papal court back to Rome, the people were demanding that an Italian pope be elected after Gregory's death. This led to the election of Urban VI, whose non–papal name was Bartolommeo Prignano, and was chosen by the cardinals. However, the city was in major turmoil from the so–called Babylonian captivity that the Vatican palace (or papal palace) was stormed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The Great Schism Of 1054 Chapter Summary The Great Schism of 1054 The Great Schism of 1054 was the separation of what is now the Eastern Orthodox Churches and the Western Roman Catholic Churches. In the book, The Orthodox Church, Timothy Ware explains several reasons that influence the separation of these two churches. Ware explains how the Great Schism happened gradually over time, where Catholicism would slowly branch away from the Eastern Side. He specifically pointed out that starting in 1009, the new Pope's on the western part of Europe were not included in the Constantinopolitan Patriarch list of all the great Patriarchs, or the Diptychs. Since all of this started in 1009, Ware believes that this is the "real" date of the Great Schism. The Diptychs are "a visible sign of unity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Black Death Of The Middle Ages As the middle ages came to a close, political theologians set forth a series of political ideologies that would help shape modern day democracy. The Black Death greatly affected the beliefs of the power in Catholic Church. With seemingly randomly mass death of the young and old, the peasant class began to revolt. While unrest occurred throughout Western Europe events like the conciliar movement called into question the emerging conceptions of limitations on rulers' power. Theologian including John Wycliffe, William of Ockham, and Christine de Pizan all captured the number political ideas of the time. The events that defined this period in history helped shape what we have come to know and trust in our government. During the time the Black Death swept Western Europe, questions of who's authority was supreme to the land arouse. "Disaffection with the church, or the thought that it might be not be true or the only way to salvation, spread in all ranks of society. It was not only kings who disputed the claims of the clergy. Obscure parish priests, close to the distress of ordinary people, began to doubt the power of their ecclesiastical superiors" (p. 47 of "Disasters of the Fourteenth Century" Handout). Theologians across Europe set forth ideals for a church to hold councils to in order to constitute the ideals of the entire Christian population. Gender Roles In The Great Gatsby And Tiffany's Society Gatsby and Tiffany's both explore a sexual upper class that hides behind propriety in lieu of expressing their desires, and a promiscuous rising class that is more forward about their sexuality, but fail to make meaningful connections. Yet, even at the beginning of a modern era in America, both classes adhere to traditional gender roles that provide a struggle to escape the sexual tradition that molded the country. Daisy from The Great Gatsby and José from Breakfast at Tiffany's mask their sexual desires despite being inherently sexual themselves. The Great Gatsby follows a man named Jay Gatsby who is madly in love with his past lover, Daisy. Daisy is a member of the establishment, as she was born into her wealth. Gatsby, a rising class bachelor, has an aching desire to be with Daisy, and Daisy, who once reciprocated these feelings, married an establishment man named Tom. Daisy received news that Gatsby was enlisted in the military right before she married tom. Jordan, another elite character, recounts this day, noting how much Daisy "cried and cried" at the realization that she is in love with Gatsby and not Tom, exemplifying a divergence from the establishment that she desperately attempts to maintain. After her episode, "she didn't say another word" and Jordan "hooked her back into her dress", which hooks her back into a proper life in the established elite. She also wore her "pearls around her neck", further enforcing the masking of her sexual desires through propriety ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Changes in the Catholic Church during the High Middle... In the year 1378, the Roman Catholic Church became divided when the King of France decided to replace the current Italian Pope with one that he elected. During the Great Schism, there were two popes claiming authority over the Catholic Church. Following the split, the papal offices began to lose their authority. Ultimately, the cardinals of both popes decided that an ecumenical council of godly men could collectively possess more divine authority that just one pope. In 1409 at the council of Pisa, the church council was asked to elect a new pope that would unite the sides, meaning there would be three popes. Now, there was Pope Urban VI from Italy, Pope Clement VII from France, and the new member, Pope Alexander V. Neither the Roman or French popes were willing to give up their power, now creating a three way battle for the church's authority. From 1414–1418, the Council of Constance was successful in healing the Schism, leading to the resignation of the Roman Pope. The schism was healed and there was room for an election of a single pope, Pope Martin V, who reigned from 1417–1431. The Great Schism of the West introduced a newly expanded authority for the general councils of the church. Furthermore, during this time, the church was undergoing a cleansing process regarding the different religions that were practiced. Now, women were active participants in the spiritual movements of the age. The amount if women joining religious houses increased rapidly as new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In today's global job force, competition with foreign countries is rising. The world and its economy have changed since the origin days of the American Dream, but the common aspirations of the American people have not faltered. The Dream is tangible, but it is true that it is becoming harder and harder to reach and live it. In today's world, it is almost as if the Dream is on hold for those born into the lower and middle class. Some will always be born into wealth with the world at their fingertips, but hard work will always pay off. While it is true that success is more difficult in today's times, the American people still do as they always have and persevere. Prosperity may be harder to reach, but that just means harder work and more dedication is required. The American Dream is the shared philosophy of the American people, and very much a reality. F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel The Great Gatsby deals with many of the social and philosophical intricacies associated with the American Dream. Written during a time of strong social division, the American Dream was the aspiration of success and wealth for the common man. Manifesting itself in a luxurious lifestyle, Fitzgerald's American Dream in the novel represents wealth and all the bells and whistles that go along with it. This is different than what the dream is commonly accepted as today, but many of the issues along the path of attaining that dream have stood the test of time. Great economic and ... • 53. The Great Schism Essay The crises of the Catholic Church were the Great Schism. It started five months after Urban's election of the thirteen cardinals, all but one of them French, formed their own conclave and elected Pope Clement, a cousin of the French king. The both of them insisted they had voted for Urban in fear of their lives, having been surrounded by a Roman mob demanding the election of an Italian pope. This became a scandal to Christendom, and the allegiance to the two papal courts divided along political lines. Like England and its allies acknowledge d Urban VI, while France and its orbit supported Clement VII. Now they had to make approaches to end the schism. They first thought to attempt to win the mutual cession of both popes, so it would clear the way for the election of a new one. The other idea was to secure the resignation of the one in favor of the other. But at the end, both of the approaches failed and now each pop considered himself fully legitimate, and too much was at stake for either to make a magnanimous concession. They realized that there was now only one way, to go to a special church council empowered to depose of them both. In legal terms, only a pope was allowed to convene and dissolve a church council and the competing popes weren't going to summon a council they knew ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 57. What Caused The Great Schism Of 1054 To understand what caused The Great Schism of 1054, it is important to first have a background knowledge of who was involved. The divide occurred among the land, with a west side and an east side. The western side was inhabited by Romans and spanned from current Portugal over to Hungary, also including the more northern countries from Ireland to Sweden. These borders were frequently changed throughout history, although their principal area was always that of the German states. This area was referred to as the Holy Roman Empire. The Eastern area, on the other hand, were inhabited by Greeks and the area was often referred to as the Byzantium Empire. The empire included current Russia and Bulgaria. These countries together formed the Eastern Slavic Principalities, with their capital based out of Constantinople. Apart from the geological differences, there were also political and lingual differences between the East and West. Communication was difficult between the Greek–speaking East and the Latin–speaking West, as the church and other leaders no longer read, let alone spoke the language of the other half of the Christian world. The language barrier separated the civilizations greatly. Apart from lingual differences, there were also political differences within both the church and the empires. Both sides had differing views on who should hold power in the church. On the eastern side, the Byzantine emperor was also the leader in the church. His name was Michael Cerularius, ... • 61. A Schism Was The Cause Of The Great Schism The Christian church was split between the Pope of Rome and the Patriarch of Constantinople, each holding different opinions on religious policy, namely ikons. The two branches moved further and further apart until they became the separate Roman Catholic and Eastarn Orthodox churches in an event called the Great Schism. A schism is a religious divide or conflict, and a great one would have great impact on the fate of its religion. A schism was already forming between the Pope and Patriarch, whose powers were unbalanced and views were not alike. What finally caused the Great Schism was the issue of ikons– images of the divine used in worship–and iconoclasm–the disapproval of that practice. • 65. Characteristics Of The Renaissance The beginning of the renaissance started in the 1400's in Florence. Many turned towards Humanism which was an emphasis on man's qualities and power. Idealistic realism was showed through the paintings in this time. Idealistic realism was a way of painting people as real as possible, to how they would look like in life. Michelangelo demonstrated this technique through his statue, The David. The Renaissance also focused on what is now called the "ideal renaissance man", which was an athletic looking, handsome, and intelligent man. During this time, the Caravel was invented, which was a large boat used mostly for exploration. This was a new way to spread the ideas and also expand territory. These were the same boats that Columbus used to found North America. Another key event during this time was the Spanish Inquisition. Spain decided that they only wanted Catholics in there country so the soon used violence to convert the Muslims and Jews to Catholicism. Soon most of Spain had become Catholic. These are just a few of the characteristics of the Renaissance, which all connect together and in short, shape the decisions of the people of this time. The 15th century was filled with many religious complications and many of the new moral standards and lifestyles were affected by the disasters that occurred in the 14th century. There was the Western Schism, church corruption, and the Spanish Inquisition, all of which changed the church to the modern sense they are now. Throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Supply Chain Case Study: Tim Hortons 1. When I was eating at Tim Hortons today, I noticed that there were boxes stacked on top of each other next to the vending machines under the staircase. The boxes are all branded with the Tim Hortons logo so I assume that they all belonged to Tim Hortons. None of the boxes were opened, but I could easily guess the contents inside just by looking at the pictures found on the outside of each box (spoons, napkins, chocolate milks, etc...). 2. In any restaurant or café shop, the supply or food pantry room is almost always located inside, near the kitchen area. If that is the case, then why are the supply boxes lying out in the open (Student Union) and not inside of Tim Horton's supply pantry? 3. a. The boxes do not seemed to be open yet (sealed with tape) so it is possible that they are new and the contents are still inside. b. One pantry room is located inside the shop and the other is located near the vending machines. The boxes located outside of Tim Hortons "Employees ONLY" door might contain perishable food items (cooking ingredients) that must be placed in the pantry room located inside the shop. The boxes located near the vending machines contain non–perishable items (eating utensils) and therefore, do not need to be placed in the pantry room inside the shop. The presence of a moving dolly/cart indicates that it was recently used to transfer boxes from one place to another (truck > pantry room #1 > pantry room #2). The locked door found in between the boxes and the vending machines has a high possibility of being an entrance to the second pantry room. • 73. Two Great Schism Essay There were actually two great schisms, and both contributed to the protestant reformation. The first happened in 1054, and began as many conflicts did in those days, with an invasion. The Norman invasion of Sicily and Rome took place in ____ And Pope Leo IX and some dude named Arygos or sonthing raised an army together (Basically for the pope and for the emporer) to combat the Norman threat. However, there were already high tensions happening in the catholic churches between the byzentine empire and the Holy roman version. The Byzentine or greek peeps who mainly resided in Greece and Italy after conquering it (Evne though Byrentyne was at a very differnt place closer to the middle east) had some issues with how the romans ran the christian religion. Thy did things differently, and so cultures obviously clashed. The main issue was that one of the leaders of the byzentine version of christianty was a dude named klaryguls or something and he wasn't into arygos so when arygos raised an army with the pope to combat the normans, he was petty and banned some latin churches. The pope, in exile, defeated and captured by the Normans, couldn;t do much as he was under house arest. So Klaryguls sent him a letter and was like bread, you're doing it wrong. • 77. Essay on The Great Schism The Great Schism During the late 14th century and the early 15th century there was a great division in the Catholic Church. The Papacy was becoming blurred. The center of the Roman Catholic Church had been moved from Rome to the city of Avignon during the reign of Pope Clement V; and there was now a movement to return the center of power back to Rome. This movement was first truly seen under Pope Gregory XI and his successor Pope Urban VI. Earlier Pope Urban V had moved the center to Rome but it had been proven to be no more than a temporary idea; he had gone back to Avignon to die and there his replacement, Pope Gregory XI was elected . Pope Clement VII was also the cousin of the French king, which insured that the church would be under French influence. The cardinals insisted that they had to elect a new pope, Pope Clement VII, because the election of Pope Urban VI was not valid. They were coerced into electing the Roman pope for fear of their lives; a mob of Italians outside of the conclave that elected Pope Urban VI had threatened to massacre the cardinals if a foreigner was chosen as the replacement for Gregory XI. None the less the Papacy was now divide. The saying "United we stand, while divided we fall." is very valid in this instance. The church is having many problems around this time period and many people are converting, or shale we say shifting, to other forms or Christianity. Whereas before these problems occurred the church was the central power in Western Europe and had great influence over the governments in their sphere of power. This event, the schism, caused a split in the Catholic Church and divided countries among the two popes. "Everyone realized that the schism resulting from the counter–election of Cardinal Robert of Geneva as Pope Clement VII . . . was a tragedy for the church . . ." England, the Holy Roman Empire, Hungary Roman Empire, Bohemia, and Poland supported Pope Urban VI. While Pope Clement VII had gained support from France, Napales, Scotland, Castile, and Aragon. Dante, the poet, reveals that schism and scandal cause division within family and community. The sinners must walk in an endless cycle of punishment. Their bodies are cut up by the sword of a devil, only to heal and come back to be sliced again. These sinners are aware of certain things going on in the world, but they can only contact the living through Dante the pilgrim. By advising a son to rebel against his father, he caused an unethical divide within family and political leaders. The head, the father, is now separate from the body, the son. Now Bertran must suffer the pains of division he has caused. Dante says "of his own self he made himself a light and they were two in one, and one in two." The contrapasso is so clear, that Bertran himself is his own light, realizing his own sin. He is aware that he has made himself into his own example. He even states, "In me you see the perfect contrapasso!" The 'two in one and one in two' represents the whole being split by the schism into parts. Together the parts are still Bertran, just as Henry III is family to Henry II in the same nation, but they are at the same time two separate parts because they have turned against one another. The sight of Bertran's severed head is unnatural, just as a son turning against his own father is an abomination against family. That is not the way to rule the church, but to let the supreme God rule instead of man. The conflict materialized for many reasons, but mainly the disagreements of the power of the Pope and the language difference of the West and East. The East believed in an ecumenical patriarch heavily disputing the power of the Pope. The West thought the Pope deserved full power, hence the name Power of the Pope. Moreover, while trying to argue about the power of the Pope, they couldn't understand each other, posing another dilemma. Even though they had many differences, they also had many similarities with one another. One of the biggest similarities between these two great empires was they both practiced the religion of Christianity. People may not know but they practiced different types of Christianity in these two empires. The Romans would practice in Catholic churches while the Greeks would practice in the Orthodox church. The reason for these two churches to split up was because of an event called the Great Schism which caused Christianity to split into these two churches. Many people at the time might say that this was a good thing, others might say it's a bad thing. The schism caused many different event to occur. According to the documents, assumption of power and rivalry over land was the causes of the schism, churches blaming each other and ill treatment were its effects. One of the events that lead to the schism was that one church had more power that the other. Constantine was the first emperor to tolerate Christianity. As time went on and the empire became under the rule of Justinian, one of the most beautiful architectures in Europe, the Hagia Sophia, was built. As more adjustments were being made to the empire, one of the biggest changes was expansion. The Byzantine Empire started to conquer more of the land to the west and had started expanding the empire to the point where it included Italy, Sicily, North Africa, southern Spain, Syria, Greece, Italy, Egypt, and North Africa. The location of the capital, Constantinople, eventually made it become extremely successful and wealthy. This was because the empire brought together Europe and Asia, and Constantinople started to play an important role in the spice trade routes. Through the trade routes, they were able to exchange silk, cloth, gold, fish, caviar, leather, spices, stones, and etc. from all over the Asia. The empire's growth lead to the spread of Christianity. Unfortunately, due to the empire's expansion and how large it was, the Byzantine Empire encountered many difficulties. There was much more land for the military to guard, especially after Justinian had built the twelve mile border of walls and because so many people were trying to overthrow the empire in greed. An example would be the Barbarian people, who wanted to take over the Byzantine Empire and its capital for the land, power, and wealth. Even though the Byzantine Empire gained access to more resources, the resources were used up due to how many people were a part of the empire. • 105. The Protestant Reformation And The Reformation In 1527, King Henry VIII of England filed for divorce from his wife, Catherine. As insignificant as this event may seem, it actually marked the beginning of a religious and political reform from the corrupted Roman Catholic Church: the English Reformation. The English Reformation wasn't the only movement that led to the separation from the Catholic Church, though. The Protestant Reformation, starting only ten years before the English Reformation did, first recognized the corruption of the Catholic Church. The English Reformation noticed the corruptions of the Catholic Church, but was more focused on creating new political and religious authority. Both of these reformations relate to one another greatly, but are still considered to be individual movements. Papal authority was stripped during these reformations, and all of Europe lived differently afterwards. While Catholicism still existed after the reformations and is still practiced today, many new religions exist today as an effect of the reformations. The political power that the Church held diminished and was replaced by the English state. Both the Protestant Reformation and English Reformation impacted the political power and religion of the Catholic Church and all of Europe. Without these movements, Christian religion would not be what it is today. BUDDHISM BEFORE ASHOKA Early Buddhism was wracked with factionalism in the century following the death of Gautama Buddha, a situation that did not improve with the convocation of the Second Buddhist Council. Primarily, the dissention within Buddhism stemmed from disagreement over asceticism as a necessary part of monastic life, with certain sects advocating the strict discipline commonly associated with the wandering monks of Hinduism and others embracing the ostensibly Bacchanal yet introspective ethic most associated by Westerners with The Buddha. Naturally, many controversies arose over these competing narratives concerning the nature of The Buddha, and, though each camp has since split into the myriad disciplines Buddhism is known for today, every succeeding schism is an analog of the first, a battle between the essentially Indian (and therefore Hindu) ideal of Vinaya and the dogged quest for Dharma. • 117. The Causes Of The Black Death European civilizations developed most of their foundations during the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries. During this time, the Catholic Church reached its climax. By the fourteenth century however, a devastating number of catastrophes resulted in the destruction of medieval civilization. The Black Death, a devastating plague, was the most destructive natural disaster in European history. Following in its wake were numerous economic and social crises, including political unrest during the Hundred Years' War. The Catholic Church also experienced its own crisis. All of these economic, social and political issues shook Europe to its core, but not enough to crumble its resilient foundation. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, Europe began to experience a change in weather patterns that shortened growing seasons that resulted in widespread famine and hunger. This in turn contributed to citizens having a higher susceptibility to disease due to malnourishment, especially evident when the Black Death struck Europe. The Black Death, an epidemic of the bubonic plague, swept through Europe in the mid–fourteenth century causing social, political and cultural turmoil. Genoese merchants brought the plague to Sicily, off the coast of Italy, which then made its way through commercial trade routes all the way into Spain and France (Spielvogel). Prof. Andrea Donovan Humanities 252 5 May 2016 Protestant Reformation and Literature "For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver." Martin Luther. The Protestant Reformation was a great schism from the Roman Catholic Church initiated by Martin Luther. He was widely acknowledged to have started the Reformation with his 1517 work "The Ninety–Five Theses" in which he began by criticizing the selling of indulgences, insisting that the Pope had no authority over purgatory and that Catholic doctrine of the merits of the saints had no further foundation in the Gospel. The Protestant position, however, would come to incorporate doctrinal changes such as sola scriptura and sola fide. The central drive behind these changes was theological, though many others factors played a part, including the rise of nationalism, the Western Schism that eroded people's faith in the Papacy, the impact of humanism and the new learning of the Renaissance which questioned much of traditional thought. Many of these men succeeded. According to –––, these men include St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits, and St. Dominic, founder of the Dominicans. However, these changes were permitted by the pope, and thus they remained members of the Catholic Church. Second, the religious wars of the 1500s. According to –––, In the mid–1500s, millions of peasants revolted against their rulers in the name of equality before God. It was because of this spark that many countries chose to follow the trend of converting to Protestant Christianity. It was through this decision that Europe was divided into different denominations. However, not all countries were on board with this decision. According to –––, this led to wars like the French War of Religion and the German Peasants War. ––– also stated that these conflicts were only stopped by treaties like the Peace of Augsburg and the Peace of ... The Great Schism Of The Church Grace Communion International logoGrace Communion International Login Search Home God Media Publications Our Story Our Churches Church Development Education Participate Online Giving The Great Schism of the Church 2005, 2015 July 6, 1054 was rapidly approaching, and the Christian world was about to experience a major event on the road to a schism that continues to our day – the divide between the Western and Eastern Christian churches. The central actors in the looming conflict were Michael Cerularius, the patriarch of Constantinople,1 and Leo IX, the bishop or pope in Rome. In the months leading up to July 6, 1054, Cerularius had strongly condemned the Western church for some of its religious practices and beliefs.2 As part of his attack, Cerularius excommunicated the bishops of Constantinople who followed certain rites of the Western church, and he closed down their churches. In April, Leo sent a legation to Cerularius, headed by Cardinal Humbert, with his own set of demands and accusations against the patriarch. As it turned out, Leo died in the midst of the mission, but the group continued its task. The meetings between Cardinal Humbert and Patriarch Cerularius were angry and bitter. Mistrust and a desire to maintain ecclesiastical power ruled the day. No useful dialogue could occur in such a poisoned atmosphere. Mutual excommunication Finally, relations between Cerularius and Humbert were strained to the breaking point. The Roman legates marched into

  • 138. Giovanni Di Bicci De Medici Essay I chose to do my paper on Giovanni di Bicci de 'Medici due to the fact that I am an Accounting major and am very interested in finances and the banking system. Giovanni de Bicci de 'Medici was an Italian banker and founder of the Medici bank. Giovanni was born in 1360 and unlike his descendants, Giovanni was not born into wealth. Giovanni was one of five in his family and after his father, Averardo de' Medici, died not much money was left to the family. Giovanni was also the great–grandson to another Averardo, who had served as Gonfaloniere in the 14th century. The beginning of the Medici bank came underway through one of Giovanni's relatives, Vieri di Cambio de' Medici who was much richer than Giovanni's family. He was an Italian banker who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This huge account that the Medici bank was able to obtain was due to Giovanni's friendship with Baldassare Cossa. Cardinal Cossa deserted his allegiance to Pope Gregory XII during the Western Schism and convened the Council of Pisa. His main objective was to end the schism. They tried deposing of Pope Gregory XII and Antipope Benedict XIII by electing another Pope, Pope Alexander V in 1409. Gregory and Benedict ignored this decision, so now there were three popes. Pope Alexander V died soon after which made way for Baldassare himself. Baldassare Cossa was consecrated as Pope John XXIII in 1410. As friend and supporter of Baldassare Cossa, Giovanni had previously loaned his money after Baldassare was imprisoned for accusations ranging from murder to heresy to seducing women. Giovanni used this loan in his own advantageous way because his reward for his help and loan was Pope John XXIII making the Medici Bank the main bank for the papal accounts and business. The Rome branch now had control over the curial affairs, all due to Giovanni backing his friend Baldassare Cossa or Pope John. The Roman branch of the Medici Bank always returned higher profits than any of its other operations, at least 50% of their revenues being the chief Papal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Great Schism Analysis Amelia Kasgorgis Ms. Argue Mission March, 10 2015 The Great Schism The Great Schism of 1378 was caused when the papal court, which was based in Rome, elected an Italian Pope named Pope Urban VI. The French cardinals refused to accept the Italian Pope so they announced that his election was invalid and elected a new Pope, Pope Clement VII. Urban VI began to show absence in self control when he criticized the cardinals for their luxury and laziness and when he revealed his plan of reforming the Church. Urban VI's violent and abusive treatment towards the cardinals caused them to fear for their lives and believe he was mentally ill; this lead to the turn against the cardinals to abandon Rome. "At Anagni on August 2 the dissidents published a manifesto in which they pronounced his election null and void, on the ground that pressure from the Romans had made a free election impossible"(Great Western Schism). When they took away the position as Pope from Urban they elected his rival which was Clement VII. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Avignon cardinals did the same when Pope Clement died, when they elected Benedict XIII. Trying to find a solution the University of Paris suggested that the two Popes should resign with judgment by a summoning of a general council. Pope Boniface IX died and another Roman Pope was elected, Innocent VII, and after him Gregory XII, both who promised to resign simultaneously with the French Pope but they never went through with it. Eventually cardinals from both Rome and Avignon abandoned their Popes and agreed to summon a great council to end the schism On March 28, 1409. Neither Pope showed up at this council meeting where they were both deposed as Pope on Jane 5, 1409. The cardinals of the council elected a new Pope, named Alexander and after his death John XXIII, which didn't work because both Rome and Avignon Pope would officially step down from their ... Early Church Fathers Attitudes Toward Women Essay Chapter 6 Early Church Fathers' Attitudes Toward Women "Then, as the church became fused with the secular, misogynistic society of Rome, Christ's attitude toward women and the doctrine of equality were purposely forgotten," 21, 34 Following are only a few of the mean–spirited quotes made by the early church so–called fathers and from modern preachers. This researcher believes this kind of leadership has instigated erroneous beliefs about women and their place in the Christian church. Furthermore, it has promoted discrimination against women in general and female clergy in particular. Quotes are courtesy of John Wijngaards34 (2015) and Valerie Tarico35 (2013). The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti–family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.". Pat Robertson, Southern Baptist leader (1930–), In Huffington Post (2014). "Most of these feminists are radical, frustrated lesbians, many of them, and man–haters, and failures in their relationships with men, and who have declared war on the male gender. The Biblical condemnation of feminism has to do with its radical philosophy and goals. That 's the bottom line."–Jerry Falwell. In Religious Tolerance (2016). "Wife: Be content to be insignificant. What loss would it be to God or man had you never been born." ––– John Wesley (1703–91). "The word and works of God ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We learn by the documents that the Catholic religion had many issues after 1054 C.E. We learn from a French knight in 1204 that they believed that everyone should see the sermon on Sunday morning. When the sermon happened there were many different commands that the people were told do (Document 1), so I think that the sermon was important for the customs of the Catholic religion. We learn from a king how he has taken over some land and how he received the land from the Pope and through the power of the God (Document 9). He thought that the God would be able to protect him from things in life. I believe that when someone thinks that they will receive protection from God than they are not as nervous about the things that they do. These are some of the issues that we learn that the Catholic had after 1054 C.E in their religion. Harsher Struggles for African American Women than Men A religion is a system of beliefs that explains things about the Universe, answers essential philosophical questions and tells its followers how to live their lives in order to achieve the goal of that religion, whether it be pleasing the gods of the religion, acquiring salvation from a curse, punishment, ailment etc. that the religion claims people or persons have or self–betterment. In the religions of Ancient Egypt, Buddhism and Christianity, a clear link between environment and religion can be seen. Religion has always been present in large civilizations and is a product of the environment, climate and geography. The sun god Ra was the most important and powerful of all in the polytheistic Ancient Egyptian religion (Shaw, 273). Not many of the images that come to mind when "Egypt" is mentioned contain clouds, and that is because the land of Egypt has sweltering weather. A direct influence from the environment can be seen on the religion as the sun had a huge impression of the lives of Ancient Egyptians and the sun god is the most worshipped and important of all. From their elaborate mummies and huge pyramids, it can be seen that the Ancient Egyptians concerned themselves a great deal with the afterlife. They believed that a person would not be able to proceed to the afterlife without recognising their secular body and therefore as many as could afford it mummified their relatives. Before mummification became a common practice, it often happened accidentally when bodies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
