Internship report
Executive summery
This report summarizes my internship program which covers from august 2020 to September
2020 covering 288 hours on going internship. I had magnificently concluded the placement in
welding, Mesfin industrial engineering PLC as a requirement of master of science mechanical
design and manufacturing engineering to university of Adama Science and Technology. Most
widely I engaged with practical oriented and corporate world industrial atmosphere that during
this time I earned different sides of experiences with assist of outlet senior welder Gemechu
Lemecha. the first day of my internship, I have oriented by plant director that got in Galan plant
about company role and requirements of the placement. It was comfort me to develop the
communication, punctuality, commitment talents and team work abilities. Though I hope the
internship skills are vital for my career path. Principally I attached Mesfin Industrial Engineering
in Galan manufacturing plant department of fabrication, position welding that I ensured with
perfect drawing reading, good welding quality and properly safety use and employees assigning
mechanism as well. The purposes of the internship are to prepare the student to serve the needs of
industry and commerce more effectively upon graduation. This include providing real life
experience and exposure, thus gaining first-hand exposure of working in the real world, the
opportunity to gets self-potentials and abilities, internship help me to increase my skill, knowledge
and that I will be learnt in the University theory and enabling them to transform theory into
practical. The real-life situations are during my intern’s time with Mesfin Industrial Engineering
all employees are shared own knowledge and understanding of practical experience of the theories
being taught between the University lecture halls and the corporate commercial environment.

GALAN MANUFACTURING PLANT
Galan plant is the palace of my internship. It has around 15000m2
for material preparation,
fabrication and finishing department has included. The Galan plant is capable of handling
products like cargo bodies, trailers, semitrailers, sugar cane haulage trailers and so on. Apart
from its proximity to customers, the Galan plant has other advantages in regard to improving
capacity utilization, faster and shorter delivery time and competitiveness.
During my internship time I was worked as a welder. Welding is the production type which
used to join the metal to metal as permeates. During my intern time, all employees have not
concluded their assignments at scheduled time. Some of my host company machinery is un-
functional and many times broken repetition, because all machinery is old. As well as the
functional machinery they have didn’t use efficiently.
Therefore, all jobs are done by man power and also most working area is not comfortable for
welding lack of kaizen is described on the company. During my internship I was welded some
trailer bodies. The trailer/cargo bodies assembly operation is starting to ending is done by
welding operation, grinding operation and hammer because some parts are force fitting.

The main store is located around office of the plant director. When you get into the company you
go straight of you after 3 minutes. The material is stored Type by type. This means depend on
their thickness, shapes, length and width. The stored material is raw material for produce trailer
body/cargo body. The main materials that are used for this work are sheet metal, plate, round bar,
checker plates depending his diameter, welding rod, angle iron. The material selections are based
on the toughness of the material and load resistivity.

3.1 DETAILS OF EXPERIENCES
During my internship period, I was assigned to the fabrications Departments at the MIE
Galan plants. The fabrications Department is responsible for the assembly of cargo/trailer
bodies and welding all parts until to finalizing. This includes: ensuring interpreting drawing
with specification parts. The assignment is completed timely and accurately in compliance with
exactly assembling, and that the company welders are join the parts and welding all joining
parts. As contain the information necessary to meet reporting requirement to foreman’s, for
quality inspectors and reporting of finals results to finishing department.
My main duty was to assist the welder with implementation of the goals of the department,
which included various tasks depending on the daily activities like checking of welding parts
as drawings, inspecting conformance to specifications welding technology standards , make
safety properly, control quality of welding and all operation of welding is done by mig machine.
3.2 Major duties I was assigned during my internships are
- Checking welding parts to ensure compliance with specification and drawings
- Inspecting assembly to monitor progress and ensure conformance to
specifications welding technology standards
- Direct welding of the parts to ensure good performance stay with the industrial
schedule and maintain quality of work and standards
- Making sure use safety properly
- Giving over directions to workers as to what needs to be done to avoid
repetitive mistakes by the workers as well as reworks.
- Control plant welder welding quality
- Checking all parts of Trucks is properly assembly based on drawings
3.2.1 Checking welding parts to ensure compliance with specification and drawings
I was assigned on the welding parts to ensure compliance with specification and drawings.
All of activities are done according to drawing &welding operation, the welder properly
welds the part. Depending on what the parts to be required for what position to assembled.
Welding operation is the measure activity of Mesfin industrial engineering &the company
to assemble the cargo/trailer bodies also helps to remove errors and reworks. All parts are
detail in is specific in drawing & by visually inspection.
25. 20
3.2.2 Inspecting assembly to monitor progress and ensure conformance to
specifications welding technology standards
According to MIE is Visual inspection, those the first method used when inspecting a weld
for soundness. It must take place prior to, during, and after welding. Many standards require its
use before
other methods because there is no point in submitting an obviously bad weld to sophisticated
inspection techniques.
Visual inspection at an early stage of production can also prevent under welding and over
welding. Welds that are smaller than called for in the specifications cannot be
tolerated. Beads that are too large increase costs unnecessarily and can cause
distortion through added shrinkage stress. After welding, visual inspection can detect a variety
of surface flaws, including cracks, porosity and unfilled craters, regardless of subsequent
inspection procedures. Dimensional variances, war page, and appearance flaws, as well as weld
size characteristics, can be evaluated
During, my intern task is inspecting assembly to monitor progress and ensure conformance
to specifications welding technology standards. When the company receives its Inspecting
assembly to monitor progress, the company verifies that the welding technology standards are
consistent or compatible with the welding in the company’s ensure conformance to
specifications welding technology standards. This process of confirming the amounts is referred
to the quality of welding.
On my intern I held this duty anytime it had to be performed. After the reconciliation, during
my internships I reported to my supervisor. Assembly the join process which drawing transfer
to works most inspection on assembly is length measure exactly. The welder controls the torch
and rod simultaneously, giving him or her lot of control over the weld. Gas metal arc welding
(GMAW), sometimes referred to by its subtypes metal inert gas (MIG)welding or metal active
gas (MAG) welding , is a welding process in which an electrical arc forms between a
consumable wire electrode and the work piece metal which heats the work piece metal ,causing
them to melt and join. As shielding gas feeds through the welding gun, which shields the process
from contaminants in the air.
26. 21
Two types of operation on MIG machine:
Those are automatic and semi-automatic operation system. On Mesfin industrial engineering
the welder is using automatic operation system. Welding is in generally term for various
processes used to joining metal parts by producing coalescence, called weld, at a joint. This is
usually done by applying heat and energy whilst bringing the pieces of metal together.
3.2.3 Direct welding of the parts to ensure good performance stay with the
industrial schedule.
One other my duty intern was responsible for the direct welding of the parts to ensure good
performance stay with the industrial schedule. Properly manage welding of the parts with
schedule time is one of the most common causes of manufacturing leads time shortages. I had
duty of confirming direct welding of the parts made by clients according to foreman has
scheduled.
This sometimes gets a little production challenging. In my host company most of works
have scheduled for this welding operation proposes. During my internship time I weld the
parts depending on welding quality and easily making system.
3.2.4 Making sure use safety properly
Mesfin Industrial Engineering Galan plant was made to plan and provide internal control
measures on safety by safety departments. Safety department is not controlled all who has
activity’s to in shop without safety. If you are to makes any activities without safety, you’re
has become to penalty based on company manual. These internal controls enlightened my
knowledge on Risk Assessment that many host organizations face.
3.2.5 Control plant welder welding quality
At that company welding quality is control by quality inspector. MIE Galan plants have
giving over directions to workers as to what needs to be done to avoid repetitive mistake
by the workers as well as reworks. A quality is an estimate of welding defects. Welding
quality is depending on the material to weld, selection of welding electrode. Which means
the thickness welding size must be much the thickness of metal & type materials. The
machine power is adjusting depend the thickness of metal (work piece) and position of
welding.
27. 22
The employer has must be skilled and knowable because Sometimes the welding part is
affected by porosity by cause of selection improper materials, electrode, and angle to
welding & current to be weld.
3.2.6 Checking all parts of Truck bodies is properly assembly based on
drawings
The foremost area my intern specialized was Internal Checking all parts of Truck bodies is
properly assembly based on drawings. I was given the right to interpreting of drawings and
this includes organizing manufacturing leads time and drawings files to make sure they were
in order before the preparation for assembling. Internal assembly is concerned with evaluating
and improving the effectiveness of vehicle bodies. The assembly particularly covered jigs and
fixtures.my intern was made to generate a report to my host company adviser about the parts
of assembly, quality of welds, production lead times.
According to my host company the Trucks parts are there: -false chassis, frame, body.
False Chassis consist, the vehicle frame and everything of the vehicle, to it expects the bodies
Include, right and left board, cross member according her length. Frame is the strong metal
structure that providing a mounting place for other parts of the vehicle. Body over frame
construction, chassis parts and body bolt to the frame, side frame which length 2330mm ×
150mm, big omega 2450mm × 120mm×130mm, small omega, false chassis with frame,
winch, but during false chassis with frame assembly keep the measurement perfectly.
Body is outside of the Trucks, and attractive covering for their chassis. Body has final welding
parts, latch catch, board protector, stand colon, grill fitting, Hinge, pocket, board, ladder and
etc.
3.3, My Contribution to the organization
Safety is the main in the whole industry. The human body is affected easily so, the safety is
must for employer and company. Weld optimization side board weld bed length. I was
designed to control welding bed length in the company and the areas that needs quality of
welding. This task will assist management to reduce cost of production in the company has
possibility of facing in the near future. I also wrote a proposal to my host company which
involved a length of weld bed cost effective. The proposal aimed to improve unnecessary
welding on the company generated. Conducting of Internal assembly part and providing
report. I recommend the welder easily assemble to establish the trailer/cargo bodies & also
28. 23
worked hard so far to create value and apply my competence, motivation and work skills to
make a strong contribution to Mesfin Industrial Engineering PLC Galan plant Company.
3.4, Advantage of internships
The industrial training is based on the benefit, which it gives to me and my hosting company.
This report has been written because it is curtailing to MSc students like me to real exposure
for the practical application of what we learnt in the class.
For me as organization consists, workers with different; educational back ground, ethnic
back ground, religion and characters, and six week my stay with Mesfin industrial
engineering PLC as intern has helped me;
- Have opportunity to develop interpersonal skill with workers
- Have opportunity to gain practical skill
- Develop Skill to interprets drawing to work perfectly
- Increase confidence on practically
For Company;
- They have an opportunity to know the importance of well skilled persons
- Optimization of work assignment with employee’s
- They transfer traditional work system to nontraditional system
- They gate opportunity to produce easily mass-productions
- They minimize wastage of material and manufacturing lead time.
3.5, what I have learn during internship
During my internship I learn the following lessons:
✓ Exact drawing interpreting to works
✓ Strong MIG welding operation Skills utilizing position of welding and types welding in
practically.
✓ Ability to work with different people (team work) in achieving departmental as well as
organizational goal.
✓ Strong organizational work assignment management skills and communication skill.
✓ Assembling vehicle bodies.
✓ Welding quality, Risk in safety and Compliance with specifications drawings.
29. 24
3.6, Challenge and Problem
In MIE the big problem is interrupt of jobs. Because off customer is change own ideas. That
means as the company employees are tell to me for example the customer is at first order the trailer
and changes own ideas to tankers and etc. When we came to fabrication workshop MIG welding
parameters are the most important factors affecting on the quality, productivity and cost of
welding.
Because the machine is very old and therefore, the machine is not feed properly wire electrode
and shielding gas. Many times, damaged and working process is stop up to maintain. So, I was
affected my eyes many times. In Mesfin industrial engineering some of welder has unbalanced
skill. Because of this much time unbalanced work distribution is occurred to more understanding
the drawings. I must be used computer for drawing. It is difficult using both computer and working
as welder. The ray of welding is affected my eyes therefore have not properly use the computers.
The company system old and so many jobs are done by man power and during these times our
body feels tired due to overload work. No internet access is there because all working in shop.
Conclusion
I have met most of the objectives, but its success was under our expectations. Practically it has
opened my eyes to working life, enlightened us socially, and matured us as an adult to some extent.
It has strengthened my technical base and enabled us to integrate theory with engineering practice.
Finally, it has given us a clear sense of direction in my future studies and career as a mechanical
engineer.
Recommendation
Host Company
My training experience at Mesfin industrial engineering PLC Galan plant, I have been satisfying
there is very little to complain about Office to trainer and internet access. In case the foreman has
understand the trainer. All machines are traditional, if there are transfer to modern machine is much
better. And use work balance distributions because some of welder has unbalanced skill so it has
become over load of works between the employers. Properly safety using is fine for max
production and reduces accidents on the company. Give the drawing reading training for welder is
better and respecting the welder is better to love on the jobs tittle and increase production rate.
