(Paris, 25 November 2019) The International Union of Railways (UIC) has published its annual report on railway accidents. UIC’s safety database has been collecting data since 2001 and currently covers 27 UIC members in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The database is managed by UIC's Safety Unit. As well as serving as a depository for statistical information on accidents, it also offers extensive insight into the causes, circumstances and consequences of accidents and aligns with the classifications and definitions used in European regulations.

The Standardisation Platform of UIC, the worldwide railway organisation, successfully held its annual plenary meeting on 17th September in Paris.
(Paris, 20 September 2019) In addition to the plenary discussions, a global panel of speakers presented a wide range of topics under the headline of “Railway 4.0: Standardisation for a fully-integrated digital railway system".
The focus was on how standards, recognised as a key lever to increase system performance, achieve cost reduction and to enlarge the range of personalised services offered to the end users of railway transportation, can help to facilitate the digitalisation agenda.

François Davenne has been announced as Director General of UIC, the worldwide railway organisation, at the UIC General Assembly held on 25 June in Budapest. The appointment will take effect on 1 July 2019 with a four-year mandate. Mr Davenne succeeds Jean-Pierre Loubinoux, who served as Director General of UIC for over ten years.

The International Union of Railways (UIC) will hold the 11th International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) on June 6th, 2019 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. This year's campaign will target professional drivers and focus on the importance of stopping at level crossings. There were 439 collisions at level crossings in Europe in 2017, resulting in 282 fatalities and 240 severe injuries. Level crossings are a major safety concern, as trains can require up to a mile to stop and collisions often have severe consequences.

The Forum was held near Naples at the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa which is one of the most important railway museums in Europe.

Representatives from UIC's 7 North American member organizations and partner organizations like APTA attended to discuss the 2019-2020 work plan. The work plan will include updating the Railway Vision for North America document, exploring complementarities with Future Railway Mobile Communication System, and developing a multimodal approach through workshops in major cities. VIA Rail Canada will continue chairing the regional assembly for two more years.
