2. WHAT DO THE ENZYMES IN EZ-GEST® DO?
I Lactase — Helps digest the lactose, or milk sugar, found in dairy products.*
I Alpha-Galactosidase — Helps digest the complex sugars found in beans and other legumes, and in
cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli.* (This enzyme is not produced by
the body.)
I Protease — Helps to break down the peptide bonds in protein foods.*
I Amylase — Helps to digest the starchy carbohydrates in foods such as breads, pasta, and potatoes.*
I Lipase— Helps to digest the fats in foods.*
IS THERE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE FOR THE ENZYMES IN EZ-GEST?
Surveys suggest that frequent gastrointestinal discomforts that cannot be attributed to a specific disease
or condition are common. In one survey, almost 70% of those responding reported having at least one of
20 different symptoms — including pain, indigestion, belching, and bloating — in the last three months.
In normal, healthy adults, enzymes including lactase, protease, amylase, and lipase are produced by
various body organs (stomach, pancreas, small intestines) involved in the process of food digestion.
Studies have shown that in some people, lactase activity declines throughout the teen and early adult
years. In addition, inherited lactose deficiency is found in many ethnic groups (up to 10% of American
Caucasians, and in 60–90% of Americans of African, Jewish, Mexican, Asian, or American Indian
descent). Some research suggests that older adults may experience age-related changes in gastrointestinal
activity, including declines in lipase activity. In addition, it has been shown that heavy, fat-laden meals
can take longer to digest, and with a typical American diet, a certain amount of protein escapes digestion.
In addition, the human body doesn’t produce the enzymes needed to break apart some of the complex
sugars in foods such as whole grains, beans, peas, cabbage, broccoli, and a number of other vegetable
and fruits.
Studies suggest that the amount of lactase in EZ-Gest should significantly improve the digestion of lactose
