The Lord appeared to Abram in a vision and reassured him, telling Abram that his offspring will be as numerous as the stars. God establishes a covenant with Abram, promising that Abram's descendants will possess the land of Canaan. As a sign of this covenant, God instructs Abram to sacrifice several animals and birds. When Abram falls into a deep sleep, God reiterates his promise that Abram's descendants will be slaves for 400 years but will later leave with great wealth and return to the land of Canaan.
