Variables are any quality or characteristics that vary
from a person, an object, or anything that can be
measured and variables are also sometimes called
datapoints
This presentation/discussion talks about the different
types of variables in statistics
This includes the discussion of its differences and
showing different examples on each variables given

Nominal variables are also called categorical variables
a nominal variable is one that has one to many categories
which separates data by its qualities, characteristics and
more in order to properly represent the data gathered
which has been organized by its traits.
Examples include separating the answers in a categorical
manner with two options which are “yes-or-no” by
separating the people who answered yes or no in a sample
or field

An ordinal variable is similar to a categorical variable.
The difference between the two is that there is a clear ordering of
the categories wherein the ordinal variables can be considered “in
between” categorical and quantitative variables.
For reference, we have three categories, easy, moderate, and hard. As well
as being able to classify people in the given categories, we can also order
the categories as easy, moderate, and hard. Another example includes the:
intensity scale (low, medium high)
Numbering ( first, second, third)
And etc..

9. Discrete variables
• discrete variables are also called numerical variables
discrete variables have proportionate intervals between variables
which are similar to an ordinal variable, except that the intervals
between the values of the numerical variable are equally spaced.
Example:
Number of students – 30- 40- 50- 60…-80

11. Continuous variables
• Are variables which has values with a finite interval that takes on
any values, your average grade, percentages, and ratios or a
range of numbers can be considered as an example of a
continuous.
“ variables a discrete variable can assume only a finite number of
real values within a given interval.”
e.g.
An evaluation of scores for a competition has found that the average
score of the competitor is 8.5 out of 10
