Europa Uomo in a Nutshell
Europa Uomo: The increasing frequency of
prostate cancer among the European male
population was probably the principal motive
which led three prominent and forward looking
citizens in 2003 to set up a patients organization
named Europa Uomo. The initial participating
associations were those of ten European countries.

Did You Know?
EAU Supplement n°1 - 2015
EUROPA UOMO / Did You Know? EAU Suppl. Madrid 2015 2
The main objective of this initiative, which now
includes similar associations in 23 European States,
was to improve prostate cancer awareness and
care throughout Europe.
Prostate cancer calls for adequate funding both to
optimize research and medical care. Europa Uomo
asserts that important benefits can be obtained if
they are consulted, in the name of European
patients of this mortal disease, both on priorities
and research options.
Europa Uomo believes in a close cooperation with
the professional organizations dedicated to the
fight against cancer. Our scientific committee,
chaired by Prof. Hein Van Poppel, includes
members from: EAU, ESMO, ESTRO, ECCO, EAPM
and last but not least ESO our founding
organisation together with the Oncology Centre
Antwerp (OCA). Precious information and
education is ensured through participations and
communication in all innovations in clinical and
basic research. With the ESO cooperation we are
ensured to be updated on holistic, personalized
care including quality of life and cost/efficacy of
modern treatment.
At present it is estimated that around 3 million
men in Europe live and
suffer from prostate cancer
while many others have
achieved a complete
recovery thanks to a timely
discovery and cure. The
number of men who
contract this disease is
expected to expand further
due to increasing longevity
and to reach around
450,000 new annual cases by 2020.
In fact prostate cancer is second only to cardio-
vascular crises for the premature death of
members of the male population.
In spite of improved medical care, an annual
average of 90,000 men are victims of this disease,
which amounts to a death more or less every 6
minutes. Prostate cancer is best treated if
diagnosed early and accurately in its different
stages of the natural (treated) history of the
disease. The more we learned about the biology of
prostate cancer as a chronic disease, the less we
are inclined to perform random biopsies,
unneeded diagnostic tests and most important
unneeded treatment. Patient outcomes on survival
and quality of life have confirmed this trend as
good, clinical practice.
Watchful waiting and active surveillance are now
part of the ultimate treatment selection primarily
based on patient outcomes. Still wide inequalities
exist in the outcomes in the different European
countries. We believe that only a united sustained
cooperation from all involved stakeholders is the
best way to a solution where no one suffers or die
from metastatic prostate cancer.
Europa Uomo’s Mission
Europa Uomo strives to improve public and male
awareness and services to ensure accurate and
early diagnosis together with effective
personalized treatment and monitoring which
assures the achievement of two important goals:
save more lives and reduce the public health cost.
This requires the equality of standards throughout
Europe and thus the annulment of disparities. This,
in turn, calls for improved education and better
information on risk factors and symptoms. Our
ultimate and ambitious goal is:
“A world in which no man suffers or dies
from prostate cancer”.
Improved health may achieve two important
objectives: increased longevity and lower health
outlays, thanks to timely intervention and care.
Europa Uomo also affirms that men should have a
say in their care and be treated as individuals. Care
plans should therefore be managed by professional
teams as opposed to single physicians: hence the
recommendation of Multi-Disciplinary Centres and
Prostate Cancer Units, which are in the process of
being set up all over Europe according to generally
agreed guidelines and, ultimately, a certification to
this effect.
Care plans should be concise, easy to understand
and be tailored to individual patient needs. Europa
Uomo strongly believes that it can and should play
a prominent role in the achievement of such
auspicious objectives. At present there exist wide
inequalities in Europe both in resources and in
access to high quality care. Some patients with
slow prostate cancer also risk being over-treated.
This causes unnecessary suffering and adds to the
financial burden on public health care systems.
EUROPA UOMO / Did You Know? EAU Suppl. Madrid 2015 3
Europa Uomo Management
The management of Europa Uomo is assigned to a
7 man Board, aided by a number of ex-officio
officers, who are past Board members, whose
knowledge and expertise are of great help in the
activities of the Board, which must report back to
the annual assembly where every project or
initiative is duly approved and later reported on its
successful conclusion.
The composition of the Board and invitees during the
EMUC meeting, November 13-16 2014, Lisbon-
Portugal.
L-R: Ken Mastris (Chairman), Malcolm Duncan (Editor
Newsletter & Board member), Jean Mossman
(consultant/facilitator), Max Lippuner (Secretary),
Louis Denis (Strategic Consultant), Tor Tausvik (Vice-
Chairman), Ekke Büchler (Vice-Chairman), Erik Briers
(Ex-officio member) Günter Feick (Ex-Officio
member), Joaquim Domingos (webmaster) and
Christian Arnold (Treasurer).
Europa Uomo’s Activities
During the course of each and every year the
various national associations of Europa Uomo
organize a number of events to sensitize the
general public of their respective countries on
prostate cancer.
Thanks to its international membership, Europa
Uomo provides an European dimension to raise
European standards in quality treatment and care
sponsored by the professional organizations and
educational grants by the industry. This program
includes active participation in onco-urological
congresses organized by EAU and ESO as well as
representation by its delegates in practically all
medical meetings on prostate cancer in Europe.
We also support general cancer meetings as part of
the cancer patients’ organizations ECCO, ESMO and
collaborate closely within our sister organizations
ECPC, EPF and EFMH. Once a year we organize a
European Prostate Awarenss Day (EPAD) within the
realm of the European Parliament.
MasterClass sessions: These sessions which are
organized in different locations and nations are run
by experts on the chosen medical topic and are
intended to update Europa Uomo delegates and
guests on medical advances in the care of prostate
cancer.
Masterclass 2010, Krakow - Poland
The Project Committee: coordinated by Gunter
Feick aims to improve patients’ health and
organizational progress by working towards the
achievement of these EUomo goals: 1. coordinated
European prostate cancer research with patient
advocate representation, 2. therapy guidelines in
all European states based upon latest evidence, 3.
prostate cancer centers in all European states, 4.
quality of treatment in all European states at top
world level.
The Newsletter: This quarterly publication has four
principal objectives. First and foremost, favour a
better knowledge of initiatives organized with
success by each
and every
member
association, and
thus learn from
one another and
encourage inter-
membership co-
operation.
Secondly,
improve the
visibility of
Europa Uomo
with the outside
world and to
sponsoring
associations and

professional institutes. Thirdly, spread knowledge
of important new treatments and cures, and, lastly,
offer our help as a European patient advocacy
association to our sponsors which, thanks to their
professional knowledge and financial donations,
enable us to successfully carry out and complete
our promotional activities to the benefit of
prostate cancer patients throughout Europe.
Special inter-quarterly supplements are often
produced to give appropriate visibility and
importance to special events and surveys.
