Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Portsmouth, England. He had eight siblings. His family moved to London when he was young. As a child, he worked in a factory due to his family's financial difficulties. In 1827, he began working as a lawyer's clerk and later became a journalist. He married Catherine Hogarth in 1836. In 1842, he published A Christmas Carol, which became very popular. He traveled to Italy later in life and purchased a home called Gads Hill Place when he was 57 years old. Charles Dickens died in 1870 and is buried in Westminster Abbey.
