Devadatta was the Buddha's jealous cousin who wanted power and leadership over the monks. He committed several evil acts like shooting a swan the Buddha was trying to save, killing a white elephant meant as a gift for the Buddha, and trying to have the Buddha killed by an elephant. Eventually, Devadatta's evil deeds led to him going to hell.

• All monks should live in the forest
• They should not live under a roof
• They should wear only rags, and not get robes
from laypeople
• They should not eat meat
