The Buddha’s evil cousin
Devadatta shot a swan
The Buddha ran to help it
Devadatta was angry
         He said: “Give me the
         swan! It’s mine! I shot
         it!”

         The Buddha said no.
They go to see the sage
               He says: “The
               life belongs to
               one who tries
               to save it. The
               swan belongs to
               Siddhartha.”
Devadatta killed a white elephant

                       The
                       elephant
                       would be a
                       gift for the
                       Buddha.
Devadatta wanted to marry Yasodhara
Devadatta was jealous of the Buddha
Devadatta wanted to be the leader of
            the monks
                        The Buddha
                        said
                        “Devadatta,
                        you are a
                        clod of
                        spittle.”
Devadatta’s rules
• All monks should live in the forest
• They should not live under a roof
• They should wear only rags, and not get robes
  from laypeople
• They should not eat meat
