How desperate are we for Jesus? The Samaritan woman at the well was desperate enough that when she heard, she believed. She needed hope; she needed forgiveness; she needed acceptance. She found these things in Jesus.
14. Jesus answered her, “If
you knew the gift of God
and who it is that asks
you for a drink, you would
have asked him and he
would have given you
living water.”
15. “Sir,” the woman said,
“you have nothing to
draw with and the well is
deep. Where can you
get this living water? Are
you greater than our
father Jacob, who gave
us the well and drank
from it himself, as did
also his sons and
his livestock?”
16. Jesus answered,
“Everyone who drinks
this water will be thirsty
again, but whoever
drinks the water I give
them will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give
them will become in
them a spring of water
welling up to
eternal life.”
17. The woman said
to him, “Sir, give
me this water so
that I won’t get
thirsty and have
to keep coming
here to
draw water.”
18.
19.
20.
21.
22. He told her,
“Go, call your
husband
and come back.”
“I have no husband,”
she replied.
23. Jesus said to her,
“You are right when
you say you have no
husband. The fact is,
you have had five
husbands, and the
man you now have is
not your husband.
What you have just
said is quite true.”
24.
25.
26.
27. “Sir,” the woman said,
“I can see that you are
a prophet.
Our ancestors
worshiped on this
mountain, but you
Jews claim that the
place where we must
worship is
in Jerusalem.”
28. “Woman,” Jesus
replied, “believe me, a
time is coming when
you will worship the
Father neither on this
mountain nor in
Jerusalem. You
Samaritans worship
what you do not know;
we worship what we do
know, for salvation is
from the Jews.
29. Yet a time is coming and
has now come when the
true worshipers will
worship the Father in the
Spirit and in truth, for
they are the kind of
worshipers the
Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his
worshipers must worship
in the Spirit and in truth.”
30.
31. Yet a time is coming and
has now come when the
true worshipers will
worship the Father in the
Spirit and in truth, for
they are the kind of
worshipers the
Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his
worshipers must worship
in the Spirit and in truth.”
32.
33.
34. Many of the Samaritans
from that town believed
in him because of the
woman’s testimony,
“He told me everything
I ever did.” So when the
Samaritans came to him,
they urged him to stay
with them, and he stayed
two days. And because
of his words many more
became believers.
35. They said to the
woman, “We no
longer believe just
because of what you
said; now we have
heard for ourselves,
and we know that this
man really is the
Savior of the world.”
Editor's Notes
Without Jesus, we are dead in sin ….
The Leper - Luke 5:12-13
understand our condition … we are in a hopeless and desperate situation without Jesus.
Totally Surrender to Jesus - complete vulnerability to Jesus
Know Jesus is able and willing to heal us.
When your Desperate for Jesus, you realize he is your only hope and he can handle everything we have
There will be obstacles that Satan will throw to trip us up from getting to Jesus
If your desperate for Jesus, there is not an obstacle that can stop you unless you let it
Jesus KNOWS us as well as the Father knows him
We are sons and daughters of the high king
This morning as we continue this desperate series, We are going to look into another person who did not know they were “Desperate for Jesus” but found out … Let’s take a look
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and
his livestock?”
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to
eternal life.”
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to
draw water.”
He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
Samaritan woman had five husbands and was with another man who was not one she was currently married
Even by today’s standards, this woman would be shunned, shamed in society and probably in most churches
JESUS sees through the societal restrictions and the past to see people’s future
“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is
in Jerusalem.”
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the
Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
Woman was uncomfortable since Jesus knew everything she had done …. tries to change the subject from personal to religious matters … Jesus deals with the personal and religious matter se brought up
Let’s read it again
Jesus says this not Me
Human Nature - if we do not fully understand or can control it. we fear it and ignore it … Jesus makes this a matter of the heart, i is not about where you worship, it’s about the individual’s heart for worship
We can not let our fear keep something God desires out of our worship … If we truly are Desperate for Jesus our worship needs to be in equally in Spirit and Truth with no judging others in how they express the Spirit (biblically)
Jesus ended the conversation with, “I AM HE’ … not go and sin no more
He left the conversation with her leaving no doubt who he was
Woman’s Testimony got people to Jesus
If we are Desperate for Jesus, than our life, our testimony, should reflect Jesus
Your Testimony gets them to Jesus, but Jesus is the one who saves
Invitation - be Desperate for Jesus (baptism, prayers)
