Design o-saurs in government @amie holman

Editor's Notes

  1. Hi I’m Amie, I’m here today to tell you the story of my experience working for government as a designer what you should try it too
  2. government is living too far behind the times you can help change this I think it's important that designers work for government, and more of us should try. I say try, because I’ve left I know its hard, I also know it's worth trying. And so our story begins
  3. Imagine you could travel back in time to a time before UX design, as you travelled you would see huge changes in the internet and the culture. expectations of users would move as mountain ranges are pushed up by colliding legacy systems and conflicting calls to action. Now you have reached a remarkable period of earth's history known as the
  4. triassic, it is a very different world. Mobile first design does not yet exist , and waterfall is the primary method of project management. There is no useful software only visio and microsoft office, this is a world ruled by bureaucrats
  5. Bureaucrats like this ankylosaurus are remarkable creatures, their mass is made up of thick plated armour. They are built for defence and risk management, even their eyelids are hardened.
  6. There are many other spectacular species swaggering across this landscape. Opportunity to evolve comes slowly but it does come, there is interest now in digital, design and a new focus to explore what the future of government could be. On these triassic proving grounds design-o-saurs are comparatively rare but are starting to show signs of their future success
  7. One type of Design-o-saur has evolved to thrive in government, design-o-saurs like this coelophysis can survive in the harshest of conditions, she is also light boned, fast, and she is beautifully adapted to box ticking. This Design-o-saur works internally in government, I was one of them. Drawn in by the hope of designing something with massive impact and public good at its heart, it's easy to have your otherwise sharp senses blinded by the scent of opportunity.
  8. The better public services result area 10 aimed to help government move into the 21st century with well designed digital services. From our all of government standpoint we could celebrate those already designing and aide others. It sounded like design-o-saur paradise.
  9. I arrive the technology is old and now the real test for survival begins, luckily designer-o-saurs are built for survival, we can use what we have to prove our value and can continue to push IT support for appropriate tools and hardware, soon enough the thirsty scrublands will be thriving.
  10. From one Indesign licence for a design team of eight, we can transition to full creative cloud for all. Hardware keeps improving as everyone gets thick client machines with appropriate CPU, hard drives, RAM and double monitors.
  11. Research both quant and qual together is delivered through the hard work and determination of the design-o-saurs around me. Senior leaders across agencies start talking more fluently about the user or customer.
  12. the landscape changes, where there were once deserts there are now blooming opportunities to spread best practice. As with any new industry Design-o-saurs are forced out of herds which perpetuate our confirmation biases, and we get exposed to other species which are huge and impressive.
  13. We are constantly questioned and this improves our storytelling, communication, and interviewing skills. Every day is a design challenge as we begin to understand more and more about how different roles fit together
  14. We form cohabitation bonds with species like velociraptor who take on the heavily plated ankylosaurus leaving us to break misconceptions that what we do is magical or worse just making shit pretty.
  15. We were left to focus on facilitating workshops and spreading design awareness. With help this is not the only battle we can win,
  16. contractors and external design agencies like this pterosaur’s are essential to the successful outputs we all desire. pterosaurs rule the skies supreme, flying far and wide over the land of the Design-o-saurs. Dark and scary
  17. He uses all of his gliding skills over the waves of work. Flying low brings its dangers, hungry monsters watch him from below looking to abandon insights which would otherwise create beautiful and useful outcomes. Dark and scary
  18. for this reason it is essential that design agencies ask to work with Design-o-saurs, they need to help the design-o-saurs remember why they love design and pass on their great work to someone who will not let it be forgotten when they are gone. Providing small sanctuary to the design-o-saurs and growing the perceived value of our industry because perception is everything to the reactive ankylosaurus.
  19. We have also been joined by another type of dinosaur. Dev-o-titans have been drawn to the problems which need solving and with their technical knowledge they are too complex to be threatened. Teaming up with the design-o-saurs is the shape of things to come. There is safety in numbers.
  20. Suddenly the warm breeze changes and there is the scent of fear in the air, re-structure, a merciless ambush predator, eventually the combination of shock and motivation loss defeats the design-o-saur design-o-saur a chance to join a herd who understands what UX design actually is.
  21. Not all hope is lost, more and more design-o-saurs are investing their time in government, reaching forward to make change from inside the triassic beast, to transport him into the future and leaving him in a better state than which he was picked up. More design-o-saurs are needed to work in the public service, we need to change the public expectations so that we can demand a good experience as we do from our 21st century design icons.
  22. you can be a brave design-o-saur. go and try a short stint in government travel time with me create links i don’t know the answer for you, we have a massive opportunity to improve the face of public service, you can help...
