Refactoring for Software Design Smells - XP Conference - August 20th 2016Ganesh Samarthyam
Awareness of design smells - indicators of common design problems - helps developers or software engineers understand mistakes made while designing and apply design principles for creating high-quality designs. This talk provides insights gained from performing refactoring in real-world projects to improve refactoring and reduce the time and costs of managing software projects. The talk also presents insightful anecdotes and case studies drawn from the trenches of real-world projects. Bonus: A comprehensive listing of smell detection tools and refactoring tools (40!). Contents overview: * Why care about design principles, design quality, or design smells? * Refactoring as the primary means for repaying technical debt * Smells that violate abstraction, encapsulation, modularisation, or hierarchy * Tools and techniques for refactoring

Refactoring for Software Design Smells - 1 day Workshop Ganesh Samarthyam
Fred Brooks in his book "The Mythical Man Month" describes how the inherent properties of software make its design an "essential" difficulty. Good design practices are fundamental requisites to address this difficulty. One such good design practice is identifying and addressing 'smells'. Most practitioners know about identifying and refactoring code smells. However, there is a lack of awareness on refactoring design smells and architecture smells, which are also equally important for creating high quality software. This presentation provides an in-depth coverage of design smells and how you can refactor them (with most examples from JDK 7.0).
Software design principles for evolving architecturesFirat Atagun
While embracing software design principles, architectural patterns are studied in this presentation. Principles like, KISS, YAGNI, SOLID are used for software development. Also architectural patterns are presented: Layered Architecture, Event Driven Architecture, MicroKernel and Microservices can be found.
The concept of Antifragility was introduced by Nassim Taleb to describe systems that benefit from impacts and volatility.
In this talk we will discuss how this concept may be applied in the field of Software Design with the goal of developing Change-Resilient Systems.
In particular we will address two patterns which frequently appear in Antifragile systems:
1) The Barbell Strategy and the importance of the separation between high-level abstract elements and concrete implementation details.
2) The Componentization Strategy and its applications in SOA, Microservices and Software Product Lines.

Software Design ... a nice expression, uh? But what does it mean to "design a software"? What are the prerequisites? What are the pitfalls to avoid? As Software Designers we would like to highlight on what makes us build simple, useful and above all effective software. And of course, we will talk about Domain-Driven Design in that journey ;-)

Didn't go to design school? Have a taste for good design, but aren't sure what it takes to get there? This talk takes a "playbook" approach to the mechanics of design a with process inspired by art & science. This is not your typical abstract design theory talk; you will take away to-the-point techniques you can start using tomorrow. This talk will guide both the creative-minded technologist and tech-saavvy artist through a practical design process that produces well-designed software.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.

The market is getting saturated with developersSoftware is getting easier to writeHybrids are starting to be the most valued employeesMany people think design is magic only “creative” people can design. That’s not true. Devs are highly creative problem solvers.
Took me the better part of a decade to create a design process that makes sense for software. These 10 things are the things I wish I knew as a new designerThis is not the typical abstract design talk. These are real nuggets of information you can use tomorrow to enhance your software.Best for something and worst for something else. Cherry pick what makes sense for you.
There are many types of research. I choose to do the most obvious one, because it is easy and painless.
The most basic form of research is user interviews. Motivations are the triggers that lead to desirable behaviors.
This is when I started realizing that other people’s designs had an element of polish mine didn’t.
These are the places I find most of my inspiration now.
This can be a great way to start collecting ideas. And reference then in the future.

This is pretty hard stuff. I feel like I barely have scratched the surface of type. It something of an underground cult thing. But when its done right it can make all the difference. Simple rule of thumb for mixing serifs and san-serifs.
Sorry…I said I wasn’t going to be abstract.
Grouping by size, content, color, action.I identify the relationships between the elements on the screen then start to group them.
Aligning things to a grid is the simplest way to create order and hierarchy. I usually tend to design by gut….then align to a grid. Some people put the grid on the page…first thing they do.
