This document summarizes a study that examined student perceptions of using the online homework program MyMathLab in a developmental mathematics course. The study utilized surveys with Likert-scale and open-ended questions to understand student comfort with technology, challenges, impact on understanding, and benefits. The results could help instructors and courseware developers better meet student needs. The study was conducted with 149 students enrolled in an Intermediate Algebra course at a Texas university that used MyMathLab for homework assignments.
This document summarizes an article from the Doctoral Forum journal that discusses Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism as presented in her novel Atlas Shrugged and other works. The article argues that selfishness is not inherently negative, and that there are times when being selfish is necessary and expected, such as when working to one's full potential or being self-reliant. It analyzes several concepts from Objectivism like rationality, responsibility, and individualism versus collectivism using examples from Atlas Shrugged. The overall aim is to establish why individuals should be selfish and prioritize their own interests and success.
1) A high school student was suspended for 10 days for creating a "Top 10" list ridiculing his school's athletic director that he wrote and emailed at home to other students.
2) The student sued the school district alleging violation of his free speech and due process rights.
3) The US District Court ruled in favor of the student, finding that the list did not disrupt school operations and the school's policy against abuse was overly broad and vague. The court set boundaries for what speech a school can punish.

This document summarizes a case study of a failed school-university collaboration between professors at a rural university and teachers at a suburban high school. The collaboration aimed to mentor novice teachers but faced several challenges that prevented its continuation. These included the busy schedules of teachers and administrators, different class schedules between undergraduate and graduate programs, unexpected university meetings, long travel distances, and differing priorities between university professors and teachers. The authors conclude with recommendations for improving future school-university collaborations, such as examining university policies, better organizing departmental tasks, using technology to reduce travel, and selecting collaborators located closer to the university.

The document discusses several environmental hazards that threaten schools including asbestos, radon gas, and lead. Asbestos removal from schools has cost billions but the health risks are still debated. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer and has been found at dangerous levels in over half of schools tested. Lead poisoning from water and paint is also a major public health issue, with 15-16% of children under 14 having blood lead levels high enough to impact academic performance. These environmental hazards pose threats to student and staff health and safety.

This study analyzed dropout rate data from two inner-city high schools in North Alabama between 1990 and 2007 to determine if a change in school leadership affected dropout rates. The analysis found that both schools saw a significant difference in dropout rates after experiencing a change in principal. Specifically, one school's dropout rate declined from 31.74% to 21.38% after two changes in leadership over four years. The other school saw its dropout rate drop from 18.45% to 3% following a change in principal. The results suggest that while the principal is not the sole agent for dropout prevention, the principal does have a significant impact, estimated to be around 30%, on dropout and graduation rates.
