Delphine LaLaurie was a socialite in 1800s New Orleans who was discovered to have tortured and murdered her slaves in horrific ways, keeping some alive in painful conditions. She was one of the wealthiest and most prominent women in the city but her sadistic acts toward her slaves were uncovered after a fire at her home revealed prisoners and mutilated bodies.
