The mesoscale refers to weather phenomena that occur on scales between those of microscale and synoptic scale weather. Mesoscale phenomena include thunderstorms, tornadoes, squall lines, and other weather events that range from a few kilometers to a few hundred kilometers in size. Examples of mesoscale weather include thunderstorms, which can be only a few kilometers across, and extratropical cyclones, which have diameters of a few hundred kilometers.

Principles of Convection I

The amount of potential energy a parcel of air possesses as it rises is known as convective available potential energy (CAPE), which is an important parameter for forecasting thunderstorm development and intensity.
