                    Winter care + storage      PLANTERS   Winter-proof. Frost-proof. Frost resistant. What does that mean?   In case of planters, there’s one thing everyone should know: freezing water expands and is even capable of cracking steel (such as central heating and water pipes) asphalt and rocks. It is therefore impossible to produce plant pots that are 100% frost proof. The amount of water contained in the pot determines its durability. Ceramic material is always slightly porous. What is beneficial for aerating the roots of the plants harbours the risk of damage by frost. In the wall of the container frost turns the water into ice, which expands, causes flaking, and eventually breaks the pot. Whether that happens depends on how much water the fired biscuit can absorb. And that, in turn depends on the quality of the clay, the processing methods and the firing temperature: hand crafted containers absorb considerably less water than machine manufactured goods. The hotter the kiln, the harder and denser the biscuit ware. All Decorus planters are manufactured exclusively by hand, using the best- quality materials and with the greatest of care. before being dispatched they are subjected to strict quality controls. If they are treated properly they withstand the winter months.   Winter care   The best plan is to store both the plant and the pot in a dry sheltered place. if the plant is hardy and is to be left outside, please note the following:   Containers that remain outdoors during the winter months need a drainage hole. Please ensure that the container is drained properly. As an alternative, cover the drainage hole with a drainage layer of expanded clay and fibre fleece. Otherwise snow and rainwater will remain in the container and possibly turn into ice and expand when temperatures drop below zero. This may cause the container to shatter.   We recommend placing containers under a covered location where you can determine the amount of water. Raise the container with base support to allow the water to drain. Otherwise the container may become fastened to the level surface on which it is placed through the capillary force of the roots which may cause frost damage to parts touching the ground. During the winter months, trays have to be removed or turned over to prevent any ice from forming, which in turn may cause the container to shatter. FOUNTAINS Assembly The fountain should be erected on a flat, level surface to ensure a constant flow of water. An appropriate base consisting of gravel, stone slabs or another firm material provides ideal stability. A fountain pump may only be connected to a 240-volt earthed power supply (A.C) Suitable outdoor pumps are included in the standard equipment.   Maintenance   The water needs to be topped up regularly to maintain the correct level and ensure that the pump is properly submerged. The pump may become damaged if the water level is too low. How often a fountain has to be refilled depends on the water supply and the weather conditions while the fountains in operation. We recommend distilled, filtered or rainwater to reduce potential staining and discolouring of product from calcium & other minerals that maybe in normal tap or scheme water. Since the fountain has been conceived for outdoor use and neither the design nor the manufacturing process can completely ruleout a certain amount of splashing, we recommend installing the fountain on a surface that is insensitive to water. The fountain may be cleaned with water and a soft brush if required. Avoid using aggressive chemicals or mechanical cleaning agents, such as bleach, high pressure cleaners or hard brushes, which might affect or damage the finish.                         Winter care + storage      PLANTERS   Winter-proof.Frost-proof. Frost resistant. What does that mean?   In case of planters, there’s one thing everyone should know: freezing water expands and is even capable of cracking steel (such as central heating and water pipes) asphalt and rocks. It is therefore impossible to produce plant pots that are 100% frost proof. The amount of water contained in the pot determines its durability. Ceramic material is always slightly porous. What is beneficial for aerating the roots of the plants harbours the risk of damage by frost. In the wall of the container frost turns the water into ice, which expands, causes flaking, and eventually breaks the pot. Whether that happens depends on how much water the fired biscuit can absorb. And that, in turn depends on the quality of the clay, the processing methods and the firing temperature: hand crafted containers absorb considerably less water than machine manufactured goods. The hotter the kiln, the harder and denser the biscuit ware. All Decorus planters are manufactured exclusively by hand, using the best- quality materials and with the greatest of care. before being dispatched they are subjected to strict quality controls. If they are treated properly they withstand the winter months.   Winter care   The best plan is to store both the plant and the pot in a dry sheltered place. if the plant is hardy and is to be left outside, please note the following:   Containers that remain outdoors during the winter months need a drainage hole. Please ensure that the container is drained properly. As an alternative, cover the drainage hole with a drainage layer of expanded clay and fibre fleece. Otherwise snow and rainwater will remain in the container and possibly turn into ice and expand when temperatures drop below zero. This may cause the container to shatter.   We recommend placing containers under a covered location where you can determine the amount of water. Raise the container with base support to allow the water to drain. Otherwise the container may become fastened to the level surface on which it is placed through the capillary force of the roots which may cause frost damage to parts touching the ground. During the winter months, trays have to be removed or turned over to prevent any ice from forming, which in turn may cause the container to shatter. FOUNTAINS Assembly The fountain should be erected on a flat, level surface to ensure a constant flow of water. An appropriate base consisting of gravel, stone slabs or another firm material provides ideal stability. A fountain pump may only be connected to a 240-volt earthed power supply (A.C) Suitable outdoor pumps are included in the standard equipment.   Maintenance   The water needs to be topped up regularly to maintain the correct level and ensure that the pump is properly submerged. The pump may become damaged if the water level is too low. How often a fountain has to be refilled depends on the water supply and the weather conditions while the fountains in operation. We recommend distilled, filtered or rainwater to reduce potential staining and discolouring of product from calcium & other minerals that maybe in normal tap or scheme water. Since the fountain has been conceived for outdoor use and neither the design nor the manufacturing process can completely ruleout a certain amount of splashing, we recommend installing the fountain on a surface that is insensitive to water. The fountain may be cleaned with water and a soft brush if required. Avoid using aggressive chemicals or mechanical cleaning agents, such as bleach, high pressure cleaners or hard brushes, which might affect or damage the finish.
