The need for data sharing in Rare disease researchPaola De Castro
1) The document discusses a summer school on rare disease and orphan drug registries held in Rome, Italy from September 26-28, 2016. It focuses on the importance of data sharing in rare disease research.
2) Data sharing provides key benefits like faster medical progress, better value for research money, and higher quality science. It is necessary for rare disease research given the small number of patients.
3) Effective communication and dissemination of research is also important. Guidelines encourage making publications and data "as open as possible, as closed as necessary" while balancing openness with ethical concerns.
De castro _ Editorial guidelines for sex and gender equity in research (SAGER...Paola De Castro
How improved reporting of sex/gender can influence research outcomes and contribute to more equitable approach to research across disciplines. Presented at the 14th International COMET Conference
(Communication, Medicine, Ethics). University of Aalberg (Denmark). July 4-6, 2016
This document summarizes a presentation on developing guidelines to promote sex and gender equity in research. It discusses the need to improve reporting of sex and gender differences in research to reduce waste and harm. A group called the Gender Policy Committee created guidelines called SAGER (Sex And Gender Equity in Research) to promote better terminology, study design, analysis, and reporting of sex and gender aspects in research publications. The guidelines were developed through a literature review and surveys of journals and aim to advance gender-balanced and sex-sensitive reporting in science.
This document summarizes a presentation given to editors on open access publishing. It discusses two organizations represented - the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) which works to improve science editing standards internationally, and the Publishing Unit at Italy's National Institute of Health (ISS) which produces scientific publications and supports dissemination. The presentation poses five questions to editors in attendance: how many editors there are, what the role of an editor means, what types of content editors work with, the importance of editor certification and training, and how editors can influence research. It provides information on EASE and ISS activities as well as perspectives from editors in the audience.
The role of editors in the development of the CoBRA guideline and the power of the multidisciplinary approach.
Paola De Castro, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome (Italy), European Association of Science Editors
The presentation will show how the importance of collaboration between scientists and editors is crucial to maximize the benefits of research. The role of editors as gatekeepers of science will be pointed out as well as the importance to communicate and disseminate science to different stakeholders - outside the specialty sector where it originates from - following a multidisciplinary approach. For example, policy makers, research funders, general public, patients, they all, for different reasons, need to be informed about progress of research in a way that they can really understand it and become aware of benefits they get from that. Within this framework, the different steps which lead to the development of the CoBRA guideline to standardize Citations of Bioresources in Research Articles will be outlined with special reference to the support provided by the European Association of Science Editors (EASE), an international community of individuals and associations from diverse backgrounds, linguistic traditions and professional experience in science communication and editing engaged to provide Excellence and Accountability in Science Editing.

The multimedia training involves modules in clinical aspects of HIV, statistics, and communication tailored for physicians, nurses, data managers, and community organizations. Participants can earn certificates by passing tests. The training aims to build skills that improve patient care and allow participants to apply their new knowledge to advance the CASA project's goals.
Brasil pioneer of OA to scientific information: experiences of collaboration within the NECOBELAC project. Workshop on prevention of asbestos related diseases in Brasil. Rome, September 9, 2014
The document discusses open access to research publications and data in Horizon 2020, the European Union's research and innovation program from 2014-2020. Some key points:
- Horizon 2020 promotes both green open access self-archiving and gold open access publishing with costs covered by the publisher. It also encourages depositing underlying research data.
- A pilot project will test and monitor experiences with open access to research data across different disciplines to understand barriers.
- Guidelines provide information on open access requirements for publications and data management plans. Compliance will be a condition for funding in certain areas and disciplines.
- Issues around responsibilities, global collaboration, infrastructure, and the health sector are discussed in the context of open access and
The NECOBELAC project was a European project from 2009-2012 that aimed to improve scientific writing, promote open access publishing models, and foster technical and scientific cooperation between Europe and Latin America in the field of public health. It conducted two levels of training activities through 8 training courses for trainers and over 40 local training replications, developed innovative training tools in the form of topic maps, and established a network of over 200 institutions across 15 countries. The project successfully increased awareness of open access and scientific communication through its diverse training initiatives and topic maps, which provided a sustainable model for improving scientific communication according to local needs.
