case study

Overview
 Background – the hockey team was facing challenges after losing 6 matches
constinously, so on November 4, 2017, STEVE SCALA decided to do inevitable
discussions with his friends regarding the team’s success.
 Challenges Faced by Team Members – many challenges faces by team members like;
Resistance to change, Lack of Accountability, Communication Breakdown, Ego &
Individualism, Lack of trust & Cohesion, Injuries & Fatigues, External Pressure &
Expectations & Balancing Personal & Professional Commitments
Questionnaire
 Which players should they have signed?
 Which players should the team trade for?
 What line combination would serve the team best?

To face the challegence the following plan should be adopted by team members;
 Player Recruitment
 Coching Strategies
 Training & development
 Team communication
Contracts & Salary CAP
There are three contract types sepcified for the players;
 Entry - Level Contract – this contract is for the youngers players (age 25), who
were signing their first contract. This type of contract specified a maximum salary
of US$925,000 per year.
Contracts & Salary CAP
 35+ Contract – moslty this contract is for the older player. This type of contract
was designed to prevent a team from artificially lowering the team’s salary cap
burden by taking advantage of the older players retirement. Thereby creating a
smaller cap hit (Players Salary amount) charged against the team’s salary cap.
 Standard Contract
Players Rankings
 Lines – A hockey team typically had several groups of three forwards players, that
played together and substitued other lines during the game. Some hulders occurs
in between forward palyers like;
‘Unclear about which respective player skill would
affect the overall performance’
Players Rankings
 To address which player skill effect the line, like; which player is worse than the
other in a three players line the following modelled used in the mumerical form;

Making a Decision
 Scala gathere a collection of players statistics from the 2016 -17 season (Ex 1). He
wondered whether this data could help determine the factors that drove players
salaries.
 Also he was courious about which line combination made the most sense for his
team to use going forward. Wanted to determine what tema member should the
top three forward lines.
Making a Decision
Questionnaire:
 When different players put together on the same line, would their rankings add up as a
linear average?
 Was a more in-depth analysis required to determine how each player’s specific skills
interacted with those of others players?
 Which type of interaction should apply to each skill?
