5. PROJECT BRIEF
The city of Jacksonville, FL has been conducting Master
Plan studies trying to establish ways to connect their
residential, sports district, and downtown areas together
for several years. Here at Florida A & M University, the Fall
2014 Graduate Design Studio was asked to conduct a
similar study that proposed building, and public space
ideas that will establish better connections. Some of
those proposals include high rise residential buildings,
hotels, branch libraries, a university district, aquarium, and
mixed use building district.
The building proposal for this project is The Riverside
Resort. which is one of the various resorts or residential
buildings apart of the master plan proposal. The site is
located at the riverfront promenade and the intersection
of Franklin Street and Gator Bowl Blvd.

9. Design Intent:
The concept for the design was inspired by the human brain. The brain is
said to have a logical side (left) and the intuitive side (right). This is repre-
sented in the building where the rigid elements represent the logical side
and the curved elements representing the intuitive side. The design have
a harmonious characteristic that can be seen in the ways the curved
elements are merging with the other spaces, creating a flow of spaces
like streams connecting to land. The building scale is large in proportion
according to its immediate context. In terms of human interaction,
persons will experience walking into a grand space throughout The
duality within the design was also expressed by the juxtaposition of the
curved elements merging with the cubed element. This informed the
building visually as well as physically, as it concretizes Architecture from
thought to form.

Design Intent:
“Architecture is a conversation” The diachronic approach was to be expressed
using the contextual basis as the driving force behind the final product. The
design objective was to design a building relating to the urban fabric. Several
paradigms was applied to the design. The Alphabet building concept was used
to derive the form, using letters L, O, and U. The building was to be analyzed by
the Urban Wall concept, initiated by Steven Holl. The design was influenced by
Le Corbusier’s approach to architecture; this can be seen as conceptions of
space are transformed and merged to provide a diachronic experience. The
materiality on the structure was closely related to the building context which is
predominantly brick and concrete. The structure has properties of texture, width,
and height. The variations of width and height are supported with certain materi-
als that signify the uses of the spaces. It also dictates what is public and private,
as well as shared spaces. Using this approach further enhances the continuity of
the structure as it relates to its immediate surroundings.
17. PROJECT BRIEF
Avery Fisher Hall is located in New York, NY as part of the Lincoln
Center for Performing Arts Plaza. The hall is known for housing various
notable events in the city and a frequent location for graduation cere-
monies.
The design objective for this assignment was to redesign the existing
lobby area as well as the façade of the concert hall, while integrating a
series of building systems. Upon completing a series of sketch analy-
ses and research, the final facade design was inspired by design
principles Movement and Rhythm.
The notion of movement and rhythm was extended to the interior,
displaying varying bridges the overlap in a weaving motion.
