Economic pressures and competition have created a need for superior performance and multifunctional properties of materials. The ever-increasing demand for new product properties makes it challenging to achieve the required features when using traditional materials. Therefore, new material combinations (i.e. hybrid or composite materials) are intended to meet these challenges. Composites and hybrid materials are new material combinations which can provide added value for existing products or create novel multifunctional properties.
This thesis aimed at fabricating and modifying thin-film composites (TFC) by using various coating technologies. Moreover, the target was to tailor the permeability or to create anti-fouling performance. Inorganic, inorganic-organic and organic coating layers were made by atmospheric plasma deposition, sol-gel, atomic-layerdeposition (ALD) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) dispersion coating methods. Coatings were deposited using either roll-to-roll or batch process.
The scientifically novel contribution of this thesis is as follows. The thesis contributes to the development of novel TFC structures using various coating methods. The novel TFC structures provide new alternatives or improvements for the existing barrier materials in food packaging. In addition, the developed anti-fouling coatings tackle the critical challenge of membrane fouling and introduce new low-fouling TFC membranes for water treatment.
The document summarizes the career and background of an expert in metrology in chemistry. It states that he started as a marine chemist in the 1970s analyzing metals in oceans, rivers, and lakes. He then got his PhD and joined a chemical company working in analytical chemistry using spectroscopy and wet chemistry. In 2002 he joined SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden working in quality measurements and metrology in chemistry, coordinating between international organizations. He teaches and writes guidelines, and does primary measurements using isotope dilution and spectroscopy techniques. He has always been interested in both metrology and semantics, specifically vocabulary used between analytical scientists versus other scientists and customers. It provides his contact information at SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden.
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are solid-state light sources increasingly used in general illumination. Advanced properties, such as energy efficiency and long lifetime, are promoting LED replacement over traditional lamp-based solutions. Features like small size and ease of control are also appreciated among the lighting community. Smart lighting with advanced control has attracted particular attention recently due to the increased energy savings via added intelligence. Besides the environmental reasons, the economic impact of LED lighting technology development is significant, with solid growth predicted for the energy-efficient lighting market.
This thesis addresses high-power LED lighting technology development at four different levels. At the component, module and luminaire levels, the research concentrates on thermal management, which is considered one of the main factors for reliability and performance. The research focus is on reducing the thermal resistance of the high-power LED structure. This is achieved with thermal vias through the insulation layer of the substrate under the heat source. As a result, a total thermal resistance reduction of 10–55% is shown in comparison with commercial substrate technologies.
Energy efficiency is considered the measure of the achievements at the luminaire and system levels. The topic is studied with a pedestrian street lighting installation in a real use environment. Case examples of dimming the street lighting according to natural light levels and pedestrian presence revealed power savings of more than 40% with smart control.

This doctoral thesis examines three areas of water treatment technology:
1) The use of organic peracids (performic, peracetic, and perpropionic acids) in wastewater disinfection, oxidation, and corrosion experiments. Performic acid proved the most effective disinfectant against bacteria.
2) The removal of organic residues from boiler make-up water using activated carbon filtration. Activated carbon effectively reduced organic carbon levels with no significant differences between commercial carbons.
3) The application of geopolymers (metakaolin and blast furnace slag) as sorbents to treat landfill leachate (removing ammonium) and mine effluent (removing nickel, ar

Electrocoagulation technology as a process for defluoridation in.pdfmarajos301528
The document summarizes a thesis that studied electrocoagulation technology for defluoridation in water treatment. The thesis investigated defluoridation using batch and continuous electrocoagulation reactors. Batch experiments analyzed parameters including electrolysis time, current density, pH, initial fluoride concentration, and effect of ions. Results showed fluoride concentration could be reduced from 10 to 1 mg/L within the optimum electrolysis time. Continuous flow experiments also examined parameters such as current, fluoride concentration, pH and flow rate. An empirical model was developed that could predict optimum conditions for fluoride removal.
