Seven Deadly Sins-Anger
In the essay “All Seven Deadly Sins Committed at Church Bake Sale,”1 the writer
discusses each of the seven deadly sins with many examples. The satirical newspaper The Onion
gave a situation in which anger was present. One of the seven commonly used deadly sins is
wrath, also known as anger. In today’s society, anger is very common. People get angry over the
littlest things nowadays. In today’s society, episodes such as the Colin Kaepernick incident, the
shootings in Charlotte, and the Black Lives Matter 2movement show a great deal of anger.
The incident Colin Kaepernick found himself in several months ago shows a great deal of
anger from the American people. Several months ago, San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Colin
Kaepernick sat down during the national anthem. According to cbssports.com, the quarterback is
using this incident as a form of protest for the events that show apparent hate toward African
Americans and minorities, claiming that he stayed seated during the national anthem because he
believes African Americans and minorities are being treated unfairly in the United Sates. After
1 Commas and periods always go before a closingquotation mark.
2 This is the name of a movement, so it is capitalized.
2. this incident, many people became outraged, and a video went viral of a fan burning a jersey
with the quarterback’s name on it { http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/watch-49ers-fan-burns-
kaepernick-jersey-while-playing-national-anthem/ }. The fan burned the football jersey while
playing the national anthem. People are calling the Kaepernick incident disrespectful. Not only
are people saying its disrespectful to the nation but also to the American flag. Some Americans
took his actions towards the national anthem as insulting the military. Kaepernick stated that he
didn’t mean to have people think he was insulting the military. The quarterback claims one of the
reasons for his protest is because of police brutality. He also claimed that he wants to be the
voice of the people who can’t speak out. But the quarterback still plans on sitting down during
the national anthem, and he is surprised that this incident has gotten a lot of attention. “He feels
that the attention is a good thing because he claims that people can talk about what’s happening
in the country and try to find a way to move forward from it,” according to Phil Hesel of NBC
News{ http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/49ers-quarterback-colin-kaepernick-defends-
national-anthem-protest-n639116 }. In the end, it is part of Kaepernick’s rights as an individual
to sit during the national anthem but, this action has angered many Americans throughout the
country.
Another incident that sparked media attention about angry Americans is the violence in
Charlotte, North Carolina. Back in September, a black man was shot and killed by police. The
man had been parked in a parking spot for visitors at an apartment complex. Police officers claim
they saw the man roll an illegal marijuana blunt and then hold up a gun. They claim to have
gone up to the car with the suspect and break the passenger seat window. They had identified
themselves and told the man who got out of the vehicle to put the gun down. Apparently, the
3. man ignored those commands from police and was then shot by police due to an officer feeling
threatened. This incident caused many Americans to be angry. With that being said, the angry
Americans began to protest after the shooting. The protest included several hundred people who
held signs and chanted. The protesters walked up and down the streets with t-shirts that said
“Black Lives Matter.” They were also shouting slogans such as, “Hands up, Don’t shoot” and
“Black lives matter” { http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2016/09/24/charlotte-police-
shooting/91015698/ }. Some of the protests turned violent where protesters were breaking
windows and throwing objects at police. Officers had responded with firing tear gas to help clear
the crowd. The violent protest could have caused harm to other innocent civilians and could have
caused more problems than what was occurring already. If protesters continued to use only
peaceful protests as a form of letting out their anger: then things would be a lot better than they
were. This event occurred for a while but now tensions have seemed to cool down in Charlotte.
Thus, this incident shows the anger Americans expressed during forms of protest.
The last incident is about the organization called “Black Lives Matter.” Many people
feel that this group is responsible for the violent protests that occurred after the death of an
African American. The organization is an international activist movement that campaigns against
violence and hate towards African Americans. Now, if this organization was campaigning to
help stop violence, then why would they be the ones responsible for the violent protests? To
answer that question, you would have to look at it from a different perspective. Like not all the
protests are violent, and the organization is not the only ones involved in the protests. Some
protesters are ordinary people just like us, instead of people who are involved in a type of
4. organization. The organization does show anger towards the incidents that occur, but they do not
show it in a violent way. They mainly have peaceful protests because the whole point is to stop
the violence and the hate. The main point is to make a change in the country. In brief, the
organization the “Black Lives Matter” is just trying to get the point across that there should be a
change. A change meaning no more violence or hate. By showing that they want a change they
use forms of peaceful protests.
In conclusion, the events in today’s society show one of the most common seven deadly
sins which is anger. Anger is shown in the events such as the Colin Kaepernick incident, the
shootings in Charlotte and the Black Lives Matter organization. These incidents express anger in
Americans and how they deal with it.

Taylor, as I said in conference, this is really an excellent essay. It shows full development
and also an interest in research.
