-chief at Men's Health magazine, shows The Saturday Early Show some cool gifts for dads and all
father figures in people's lives.
The holiday started as a proposal for a "father's day" in 1909 by a daughter of a Civil War veteran,
William Smart. Smart raised six children himself after his wife died. The first Father's Day was
observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Wash. President Lyndon Johnson signed in 1966 a
proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day.
Today, gifts are usually given to fathers in honor of
their influence in lives of families and friends. But a
necktie may not be enough for gadget-hungry dads.
