Illinois in 1925. Robert Van Buren was a star athlete in Plainfield
High School, where he captained the football team, and went on
to graduate from Washington and Lee University in Lexington,
Virginia.
3. Cynthia Van Buren took an undergraduate degree in Business
Administration at Washington and Lee, and later founded the
Robert Van Buren Scholarship Endowment there as part of his
legacy at the University.
4. Cynthia Van Buren’s father Robert Van Buren received his
Master’s in Business Administration from New York
University’s Stern School of Business. Van Buren also studied at
the Harvard Business School before launching his banking career
at Chemical Bank in New York City, where he rose to the
position to Executive Vice President.
5. Cynthia Van Buren began a second career after twenty years at
the Midlantic Bank in New Jersey, where he began as President
and was elevated to Chairman of the Board in an institution that
he helped build into New Jersey’s largest bank. Van Buren was
instrumental in initiating the financing of Resorts International,
Atlantic City’s first casino, and gained a popular reputation
through his company’s unique advertising of The Hungry
Banker.
