Visual analytics helps bridge the gap between imperfect models and reality by enabling analytical reasoning supported by interactive visual interfaces. This allows monitoring of models and helps ensure the right experts are analyzing and improving the models.

Glyphs in Medical Visualisations

I gave this presentation at the VCBM conference at Bangor in 2015. The paper devised a novel method for reducing the transfer function artefacts in temporal volume rendering of 4D CMR data caused by the changes in density of the heart tissue.

Could Artificial Intelligence help us communicate research better?
My invited talk at the CILIP UKeiG AGM
There’s much we do not yet know about the impact of AI within academia, it offers both opportunities and threats. One potential benefit could be in the area of research dissemination, but that is not without potential hazards. Academics and aligned specialists, including library and information professionals all have a vested interest in the communication of new knowledge. The barrier to this often comes down to the triple threat of time, money and expertise - AI might be able to help with that.
In his presentation Andy will explore some of the opportunities to employ AI to help disseminate research using digital technologies and AI but also investigate what threats lie under the surface.

Systems Genetics of Cancer - big data and all that

Let’s think about cognitive bias
The human brain’s habit of finding what it wants to find is a key problem for research. Establishing
robust methods to avoid such bias will make results more reproducible.
“Ever since I first learned about confirmation bias I’ve been see-ing it everywhere.” So said British author and broadcaster Jon Ronson in So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed (Picador, 2015).
You will see a lot of cognitive bias in this week’s Nature. In a series
of articles, we examine the impact that bias can have on research, and
the best ways to identify and tackle it. One enemy of robust science
is our humanity — our appetite for being right, and our tendency to
find patterns in noise, to see supporting evidence for what we already
believe is true, and to ignore the facts that do not fit.
The sources and types of such cognitive bias — and the fallacies they
produce — are becoming more widely appreciated. Some of the prob-
lems are as old as science itself, and some are new: the IKEA effect, for
example, describes a cognitive bias among consumers who place artifi-
cially high value on products that they have built themselves. Another
common fallacy in research is the Texas sharp-shooter effect — fir-
ing off a few rounds and then drawing a bull’s eye around the bullet
holes. And then there is asymmetrical attention: carefully debugging
analyses and debunking data that counter a favoured hypothesis, while
letting evidence in favour of the hypothesis slide by unexamined.
Such fallacies sound obvious and easy to avoid. It is easy to think that
they only affect other people. In fact, they fall naturally into investiga-
tors’ blind spots (see page 182).
Advocates of robust science have repeatedly warned against cogni-
tive habits that can lead to error. Although such awareness is essential,
it is insufficient. The scientific community needs concrete guidance on
how to manage its all-too-human biases and avoid the errors they cause.
That need is particularly acute in statistical data analysis, where
some of the best-established methods were developed in a time before
data sets were measured in terabytes, and where choices between tech-
niques offer abundant opportunity for errors. Proteomics and genom-
ics, for example, crunch millions of data points at once, over thousands
of gene or protein variants. Early work was plagued by false positives,
before the spread of techniques that could account for the myriad
hypotheses that such a data-rich environment could generate.
Although problems persist, these fields serve as examples of commu-
nities learning to recognize and curb their mistakes. Another example is
the venerable practice of double-blind studies. But more effort is needed,
particularly in what some have called evidence- ...
Data mining for analyzing social media

Abstract: The emerging configuration of educational institutions, technologies, scientific practices, ethics policies and companies can be usefully framed as the emergence of a new “knowledge infrastructure” (Paul Edwards). The idea that we may be transitioning into significantly new ways of knowing – about learning and learners, teaching and teachers – is both exciting and daunting, because new knowledge infrastructures redefine roles and redistribute power, raising many important questions. What should we see when open the black box powering analytics? How do we empower all stakeholders to engage in the design process? Since digital infrastructure fades quickly into the background, how can researchers, educators and learners engage with it mindfully? This isn’t just interesting to ponder academically: your school or university will be buying products that are being designed now. Or perhaps educational institutions should take control, building and sharing their own open source tools? How are universities accelerating the transition from analytics innovation to infrastructure? Speaking from the perspective of leading an institutional innovation centre in learning analytics, I hope that our experiences designing code, competencies and culture for learning analytics sheds helpful light on these questions.

Let’s think about cognitive bias
The human brain’s habit of finding what it wants to find is a key problem for research. Establishing
robust methods to avoid such bias will make results more reproducible.
“Ever since I first learned about confirmation bias I’ve been see-ing it everywhere.” So said British author and broadcaster Jon Ronson in So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed (Picador, 2015).
You will see a lot of cognitive bias in this week’s Nature. In a series
of articles, we examine the impact that bias can have on research, and
the best ways to identify and tackle it. One enemy of robust science
is our humanity — our appetite for being right, and our tendency to
find patterns in noise, to see supporting evidence for what we already
believe is true, and to ignore the facts that do not fit.
The sources and types of such cognitive bias — and the fallacies they
produce — are becoming more widely appreciated. Some of the prob-
lems are as old as science itself, and some are new: the IKEA effect, for
example, describes a cognitive bias among consumers who place artifi-
cially high value on products that they have built themselves. Another
common fallacy in research is the Texas sharp-shooter effect — fir-
ing off a few rounds and then drawing a bull’s eye around the bullet
holes. And then there is asymmetrical attention: carefully debugging
analyses and debunking data that counter a favoured hypothesis, while
letting evidence in favour of the hypothesis slide by unexamined.
Such fallacies sound obvious and easy to avoid. It is easy to think that
they only affect other people. In fact, they fall naturally into investiga-
tors’ blind spots (see page 182).
Advocates of robust science have repeatedly warned against cogni-
tive habits that can lead to error. Although such awareness is essential,
it is insufficient. The scientific community needs concrete guidance on
how to manage its all-too-human biases and avoid the errors they cause.
That need is particularly acute in statistical data analysis, where
some of the best-established methods were developed in a time before
data sets were measured in terabytes, and where choices between tech-
niques offer abundant opportunity for errors. Proteomics and genom-
ics, for example, crunch millions of data points at once, over thousands
of gene or protein variants. Early work was plagued by false positives,
before the spread of techniques that could account for the myriad
hypotheses that such a data-rich environment could generate.
Although problems persist, these fields serve as examples of commu-
nities learning to recognize and curb their mistakes. Another example is
the venerable practice of double-blind studies. But more effort is needed,

Data mining for analyzing social media
This document summarizes a seminar given at Dalhousie University on April 18, 2013 by Julien Velcin. Learning Analytics as Educational Knowledge Infrastructure
Abstract: The emerging configuration of educational institutions, technologies, scientific practices, ethics policies and companies can be usefully framed as the emergence of a new “knowledge infrastructure” (Paul Edwards). The idea that we may be transitioning into significantly new ways of knowing – about learning and learners, teaching and teachers – is both exciting and daunting, because new knowledge infrastructures redefine roles and redistribute power, raising many important questions. What should we see when open the black box powering analytics? How do we empower all stakeholders to engage in the design process? Since digital infrastructure fades quickly into the background, how can researchers, educators and learners engage with it mindfully? This isn’t just interesting to ponder academically: your school or university will be buying products that are being designed now. Or perhaps educational institutions should take control, building and sharing their own open source tools? How are universities accelerating the transition from analytics innovation to infrastructure? Speaking from the perspective of leading an institutional innovation centre in learning analytics, I hope that our experiences designing code, competencies and culture for learning analytics sheds helpful light on these questions.

Global Situational Awareness of A.I. and where its headed
You can see the future first in San Francisco.
Over the past year, the talk of the town has shifted from $10 billion compute clusters to $100 billion clusters to trillion-dollar clusters. Every six months another zero is added to the boardroom plans. Behind the scenes, there’s a fierce scramble to secure every power contract still available for the rest of the decade, every voltage transformer that can possibly be procured. American big business is gearing up to pour trillions of dollars into a long-unseen mobilization of American industrial might. By the end of the decade, American electricity production will have grown tens of percent; from the shale fields of Pennsylvania to the solar farms of Nevada, hundreds of millions of GPUs will hum.
The AGI race has begun. We are building machines that can think and reason. By 2025/26, these machines will outpace college graduates. By the end of the decade, they will be smarter than you or I; we will have superintelligence, in the true sense of the word. Along the way, national security forces not seen in half a century will be un-leashed, and before long, The Project will be on. If we’re lucky, we’ll be in an all-out race with the CCP; if we’re unlucky, an all-out war.
Everyone is now talking about AI, but few have the faintest glimmer of what is about to hit them. Nvidia analysts still think 2024 might be close to the peak. Mainstream pundits are stuck on the wilful blindness of “it’s just predicting the next word”. They see only hype and business-as-usual; at most they entertain another internet-scale technological change.
Before long, the world will wake up. But right now, there are perhaps a few hundred people, most of them in San Francisco and the AI labs, that have situational awareness. Through whatever peculiar forces of fate, I have found myself amongst them. A few years ago, these people were derided as crazy—but they trusted the trendlines, which allowed them to correctly predict the AI advances of the past few years. Whether these people are also right about the next few years remains to be seen. But these are very smart people—the smartest people I have ever met—and they are the ones building this technology. Perhaps they will be an odd footnote in history, or perhaps they will go down in history like Szilard and Oppenheimer and Teller. If they are seeing the future even close to correctly, we are in for a wild ride.

We will explore Vertex AI - Model Garden powered experiences, we are going to learn more about the integration of these generative AI APIs. We are going to see in action what the Gemini family of generative models are for developers to build and deploy AI-driven applications. Vertex AI includes a suite of foundation models, these are referred to as the PaLM and Gemini family of generative ai models, and they come in different versions. ViewShift: Hassle-free Dynamic Policy Enforcement for Every Data Lake
Dynamic policy enforcement is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s world where data privacy and compliance is a top priority for companies, individuals, and regulators alike. In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.
